An unexpectedly hard shot by Haider Al Nasser in the 14th minute of play forced Costa Rica's goalkeeper Herberto Obando to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. 19 minutes in the game Ghanim Al Herz did a throw-in, and the ball was quickly in game thanks to Jassem Boften. Moner Bo Qamaz might have been able to make a better finish in the 20th minute when he tried to place a hard shot over Herberto Obando. Instead the ball went over the crossbar and out. Moner Bo Qamaz ran back to his position shaking his head. Costa Rica's Herberto Obando played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Moner Bo Qamaz in the 21st minute of play. In the 23rd minute Kuwait were awarded a corner. Motlaq Al Arbash went to the cornerflag to take it. 27 minutes into the match, Kuwait's goalkeeper Manual Neuer had to clear away a ball on his right side after a cunning shot by Jose Mendez. Herberto Obando took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Haider Al Nasser, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. Ghanim Al Herz got a throw-in 29 minutes in the game and the ball was received by Bassam Al Mofede. Herberto Obando showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Bassam Al Mofede in the 30th minute of the match. In the 37th minute of the game Ghanim Al Herz made a throw-in which Bassam Al Mofede played forward. Haider Al Nasser recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 38th minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. Manual Neuer made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Diego Quesada in the 41st minute of play. In the 42nd minute, one of Kuwait:s players had the ball in front of the goal but got pushed and fell. The referee felt it was an obvious case and blew a penalty for Kuwait. Herberto Obando took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Haider Al Nasser, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. The away team players looked dejected as the walked off the pitch at half time. They had fought hard, but were still losing 1-0.

Costa Rica made a substitution. Claudio Cordero replaced Diego Quesada. Both teams looked relatively alert before the second half when the referee blew his whistle to tell Cesar Mata to make the kick off. After 64 played minutes Costa Rica got a freekick which was hit by Bernie Rosabal. Kuwait's Haitham Al Bana was substituted for Jassem Boften. Arsenio Paniagua fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 71st minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Manual Neuer having to interfere. In the 74th minute, Ebrahem Al Youha got an opportunity to score, but he didn't get a solid hit on the ball and ended up kicking it wide of the goal. After 82 played minutes Costa Rica got a freekick which was hit by Claudio Cordero. Costa Rica's Virgilio Ortiz was substituted for Alan Cordoba. Costa Rica's Virgilio Ortiz managed, thanks to a brazen rush, stole the ball on a throw-in made by Saif Al Shemali in the 84 minute of the game. In the 88th minute Haider Al Nasser shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Herberto Obando saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Manual Neuer made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Arsenio Paniagua in the 90th minute of play. After 90 minutes of play, Costa Rica's Arsenio Paniagua made it 2-0 when he simply outclassed the defender marking him and hit a curling shot into the right side of the net. Manual Neuer was left in no man's land by his defense there! Through an outstanding action, after 94 minutes, Herberto Obando successfully got his hands on the ball before it slid into the goal at the right post. Kuwait's supporters were dissatisfied at the end of the match because Costa Rica had won, even though Kuwait had held more of the ball.
