In the 14th minute, Willy Amador hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. Félix Rivera received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 15th minute. Agustin Matamoros tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. The supporters of U21 Costa Rica booed when U21 Guatemala was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 22 match minutes in a wonderful position. Jairo Muñoz didn't get a good kick on the ball. With a little luck, U21 Guatemala's Ovidio Flores got control of the ball when Pancho Vanderlat tried to sneak it across the goal line. Ovidio Flores showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Mariano Matute in the 27th minute of the match. U21 Costa Rica were awarded a corner in the 28th minute after U21 Guatemala's defender lost control of the ball, allowing it to roll out over the line. Willy Amador took the corner. U21 Costa Rica's Pancho Vanderlat was first on the ball when the corner was shot and he dangerously headed the ball towards goal, but Ovidio Flores in the goal jumped up to prevent it from getting in. After 29 minutes, Pancho Vanderlat made it 2-0 with a short kick to the right side. U21 Guatemala's Ovidio Flores tried to save the shot but he was too slow in reacting to the shot. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Pancho Vanderlat couldn't finish the play. U21 Guatemala made a substitution. The players of the away team seemed most concentrated when Alejandro Madariaga stepped up to make the kick off in the second half. The audience was convinced that Mariano Matute's extremely hard shot when he got free in front of the goal was going in, but Ovidio Flores was relentless in the 64th minute of the game. Diego Costas hit a great freekick 68 minutes into the match. U21 Costa Rica made a substitution. Joaquin Arroyo replaced Darien Piedra. U21 Costa Rica's Irving Maroto was substituted for Walter Burgos. U21 Costa Rica's Claudio Cordero was substituted for Mariano Matute. After a rather tough play, U21 Guatemala's Diego Costas got a free kick in the 69th minute. In the 71st minute, Claudio Cordero got an opportunity to score, but he didn't get a solid hit on the ball and ended up kicking it wide of the goal. The referee was alert and spotted a serious foul by Félix Rivera during the 74th minute. The player immediately received a yellow card. U21 Costa Rica walked away with a well-earned victory that was much celebrated by the crowd.
