Match Report

National stadium
Spectators: 10300 (Terracing: 7725, Seating: 2369, VIP seats: 206)
Dark clouds were building up when the players entered the field. None of the them looked very eager to play. Florencio Bühler started the match with the kick off. An unexpectedly hard shot by Joel Rubio in the 4th minute of play forced Chile's goalkeeper Honorato Pardow to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. 6 minutes into the match, Argentina's goal looked a bit too open when Florencio Bühler came free, but Ernesto Guevara reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. Honorato Pardow took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Mauro Naldo, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. In the 21st minute, Mauro Naldo left the goalkeeper for dead before tapping the ball into the right side of the net. The Argentina fans were clearly happy with the effort and the scoreboard reflected the new score: 0-1. In the 28th minute, Isidro Tipi hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. After some fancy dribbling in the 34th minute, Mauro Naldo managed to get in a good position for a shot. Argentina's supporters rose to their feet, but Mauro Naldo was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Honorato Pardow breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. The supporters of Argentina booed when Chile was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 36 match minutes in a wonderful position. Diego Armando Casasola didn't get a good kick on the ball. 38 minutes into the match, Chile's goal looked a bit too open when Mauro Naldo came free, but Honorato Pardow reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. When Joel Rubio came up free with the goalie in the 41st minute, the Argentina fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Joel Rubio couldn't finish the play. A collision led to Argentina getting a freekick after 45 minutes play. Fausto Gar hit a great ball. Fausto Gar's late challenge caught a Chile's player on the shin and left him crawling around in pain. The referee blew his whistle and produced the yellow card. Fausto Gar helped the player get up and apologised. After 46 played minutes Argentina got a freekick which was hit by Fausto Gar. After the first half Argentina were leading 0-1. They had played with great self confidence throughout the first half and fully deserved their lead.

When the second half was about to start, both teams quickly lined up and Mauro Naldo made a kick off. Argentina were furious when Eustaquio Mogel was red carded, 58 minutes into the game, but the referee dismissed their protests. 57 minutes into the game, one of Argentina:s players got tackled near the goal, and the referee blew for a penalty. Argentina's Ernesto Guevara played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Urtsín Raab in the 61st minute of play. An unexpectedly hard shot by Florencio Bühler in the 67th minute of play forced Argentina's goalkeeper Ernesto Guevara to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. After 68 played minutes Argentina got a freekick which was hit by Fausto Gar. Chile's Marcos Pissa was substituted for Florencio Bühler. The throw-in from Alfredo Melivilu in the 79th minute of the game was unfortunally taken care of by Argentina's Joel Rubio. After a defensive mix-up in Argentina's zone, Lucero Sáenz stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Ernesto Guevara came out of the goal and Lucero Sáenz tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. Ernesto Guevara came out of the goal in the 88th minute to try and stop a shot by Chile's Urtsín Raab. But to his dismay, Urtsín Raab quickly shot the ball in between his legs and into the goal making it 1-1. In the 95th minute Marcos Pissa shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Ernesto Guevara saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. In the 96th minute, Marcos Pissa made a precise shot to the right of Ernesto Guevara. Argentina's defense was at fault, and the scoreboard reflected the new score, 3-1. For all the effort they put into the match, the Argentina players left disappointed. They had fought hard, but couldn't break down the home team's defense. The match ended in a win for Chile.
