U21 Portugal were awarded a corner in the 6th minute after U21 Romania's defender lost control of the ball, allowing it to roll out over the line. Paulo Leite took the corner. U21 Portugal's Américo Coelho was first on the ball when the corner was shot and he dangerously headed the ball towards goal, but Mihai Pătrășconiu in the goal jumped up to prevent it from getting in. Mihai Pătrășconiu made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Eusébio Panter in the 8th minute of play. Mihai Pătrășconiu showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Johnny van Persie, who was totally free with the ball in the 11th minute. The supporters of U21 Portugal booed when U21 Romania was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 12 match minutes in a wonderful position. Ionuț Dinculescu didn't get a good kick on the ball. If Eusébio Panter had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 14th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. U21 Portugal's Diamantino Campos played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Pavel Alexandru in the 15th minute of play. 19 minutes into the match, U21 Romania's goalkeeper Mihai Pătrășconiu had to clear away a ball on his right side after a cunning shot by Américo Coelho. In the 25th minute, Pavel Alexandru left the goalkeeper for dead before tapping the ball into the right side of the net. The U21 Romania fans were clearly happy with the effort and the scoreboard reflected the new score: 0-1. Diamantino Campos showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Petrică Nistor, who was totally free with the ball in the 31st minute. In the 34th minute Pavel Alexandru shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Diamantino Campos saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Johnny van Persie sent away a hard shot on goal in the 35th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. Diamantino Campos didn't have a chance when a screaming shot from Petrică Nistor went, in the 39th minute, to the upper right corner, 0-2 was the resulting score. In the 45th minute, Pavel Alexandru hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. The crowd was extremely unhappy with the home team's performance in the first half. They were losing 0-2.

Mihai Pătrășconiu showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Américo Coelho, who was totally free with the ball in the 51st minute. In the 52nd minute, Petrică Nistor hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. Américo Coelho recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 53rd minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. After a rather tough play, U21 Romania's Ionuț Dinculescu got a free kick in the 54th minute. Petrică Nistor received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 59th minute. Diamantino Campos tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. 60 minutes into the match, U21 Portugal's goal looked a bit too open when Mugurel Banica came free, but Diamantino Campos reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. Diamantino Campos took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Mugurel Banica, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. 70 minutes into the match, Eusébio Panter notched a goal, 1-2, to the right of U21 Romania's Mihai Pătrășconiu. Mihai Pătrășconiu was clearly disgusted with the effort of the defense and let the defenders know about it. U21 Portugal made a substitution. Vítor Ferreira replaced Rachid Baba Ali Raaymakers. Mihai Pătrășconiu made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Américo Coelho in the 75th minute of play. 78 minutes into the match, U21 Portugal's goal looked a bit too open when Mugurel Banica came free, but Diamantino Campos reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. In the 80th minute Américo Coelho shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Mihai Pătrășconiu saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Ionuț Dinculescu's late challenge caught a U21 Portugal's player on the shin and left him crawling around in pain. The referee blew his whistle and produced the yellow card. Ionuț Dinculescu helped the player get up and apologised. After 91 played minutes U21 Romania got a freekick which was hit by Ionuț Dinculescu. When U21 Romania's Pavel Alexandru in the 95th minute got a chance for a shot 95th didn't hesitate and placed the ball to the right of the goalie. A beautiful save bye U21 Portugal's goalie prevented a goal. U21 Romania's supporters were very happy and cheered loudly because their team had won after a very close match.
