In the 3rd minute the ball was on its way in behind Villa Gordiani's goalkeeper Iker Casillas, but with the help of a sacrificing defense, he could catch the ball at the crossbar. Alcides Falcão received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 4th minute. Iker Casillas tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. Iker Casillas stood for a superb save when he managed to get hold of Fredy Montero's shot from short distance in the 9th minute. 23 minutes into the match, Villa Gordiani's goal looked a bit too open when Fredy Montero came free, but Iker Casillas reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. If Fabrizio Canzano had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 24th minute. The ball went over the crossbar instead. In the 30thth minute of the game Fredy Montero who was perfectly placed tried to make a shot on goal, but Villa Gordiani's Iker Casillas was lucky and managed to grab hold of the ball. The supporters of Villa Gordiani booed when Sporting Clube de Gaya was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 32 match minutes in a wonderful position. Fredy Montero didn't get a good kick on the ball. Fredy Montero might have been able to make a better finish in the 41st minute when he tried to place a hard shot over Iker Casillas. Instead the ball went over the crossbar and out. Fredy Montero ran back to his position shaking his head. With a little luck, Villa Gordiani's Iker Casillas got control of the ball when Fredy Montero tried to sneak it across the goal line. The referee was alert and spotted a serious foul by Adolfo Cedro during the 43rd minute. The player immediately received a yellow card. After a rather tough play, Sporting Clube de Gaya's Adolfo Cedro got a free kick in the 43rd minute. In the 47th match minute, Villa Gordiani was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Ove Bergman to maneuver through the defense. Ove Bergman hit a great freekick 48 minutes into the match. The score stood at 0-0 when the half time whistle went. Both sets of players seemed reasonably pleased with how the match was going.

53 minutes had been played when some careless play by Villa Gordiani's defense caused the ball to cross the line for a corner. Fredy Montero was slow to take the kick. During this time Sporting Clube de Gaya's players had a chance to rest. With a couple of smart ball manuevers Ove Bergman in the 57th managed to get into a good position. With a left leg Renato Vargas saved Sporting Clube de Gaya from getting behind. Fabrizio Canzano struck a weak shot in the 59th minute. Renato Vargas didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for Villa Gordiani. An unexpectedly hard shot by Ove Bergman in the 63rd minute of play forced Sporting Clube de Gaya's goalkeeper Renato Vargas to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Alcides Falcão might have been able to make a better finish in the 64th minute when he tried to place a hard shot over Iker Casillas. Instead the ball went over the crossbar and out. Alcides Falcão ran back to his position shaking his head. In the 71st minute Fredy Montero shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Iker Casillas saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Sporting Clube de Gaya's Renato Vargas played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Ove Bergman in the 78th minute of play. Iker Casillas stood for a superb save when he managed to get hold of Fredy Montero's shot from short distance in the 87th minute. Fabrizio Canzano received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 89th minute. Renato Vargas tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. The audience thought a goal was coming when Ove Bergman got free with Renato Vargas in the 93rd minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. When Alcides Falcão came up free with the goalie in the 96th minute, the Sporting Clube de Gaya fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Alcides Falcão couldn't finish the play. Villa Gordiani's fans were overjoyed with their teams well-earned victory and stayed in the stadium long after the final whistle to celebrate the win.
