After 6 minutes of play, De Kasteelheren's Stefano Zijden made it 0-1 when he simply outclassed the defender marking him and hit a curling shot into the right side of the net. Fergus Fairbairn was left in no man's land by his defense there! Bernard Mülder made an important save on a dangerous shot by Bradley Carr in the 10th minute. After some fancy dribbling in the 12th minute, Ron McLeish managed to get in a good position for a shot. Rangers FC's supporters rose to their feet, but Ron McLeish was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Bernard Mülder breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. De Kasteelheren's Bernard Mülder played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Raymond Johnston in the 16th minute of play. De Kasteelheren's defense didn't have a chance, in the 18th minute, when Ron McLeish scored to the left of an out of position Bernard Mülder, making the score, 1-1. Gertjan Homan's late challenge caught a Rangers FC's player on the shin and left him crawling around in pain. The referee blew his whistle and produced the yellow card. Gertjan Homan helped the player get up and apologised. A collision led to De Kasteelheren getting a freekick after 22 minutes play. Gertjan Homan hit a great ball. With an all-out effort, Rangers FC's Bernard Mülder threw himself towards the right post 26 minutes into the match and grabbed hold of the ball from Bradley Carr, which otherwise would have been placed in the net. 28 minutes into the game, Ron McLeish was given a yellow card after he appeared to trip an opposing player. Rangers FC's manager was livid on the sidelines, but the referee was unmoved and gave De Kasteelheren the free kick. In the 28th minute, Ron McLeish hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. De Kasteelheren's Stefano Zijden got a good chance for a goal in the 37th minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. After a rather tough play, De Kasteelheren's Sjef Klein got a free kick in the 39th minute. Darius Bontine hit a great freekick 40 minutes into the match. Stefano Zijden recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 44th minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. The audience thought a goal was coming when Raymond Johnston got free with Bernard Mülder in the 46th minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort.

The supporters of De Kasteelheren booed when Rangers FC was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 70 match minutes in a wonderful position. Reece Frissell didn't get a good kick on the ball. Bernard Mülder came out of the goal in the 74th minute to try and stop a shot by Rangers FC's Ron McLeish. But to his dismay, Ron McLeish quickly shot the ball in between his legs and into the goal making it 3-1. In the 77th minute, Pieter-Jan Staarman reached a very good position and smashed the ball with a huge effort into the net, just to the left of Fergus Fairbairn. The goal made the score 3-2. Rangers FC's Fergus Fairbairn proved his good apprehension of play when he, in the 80th minute of the match, managed to save Rangers FC from getting a goal against them. De Kasteelheren's Bernard Mülder played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Raymond Johnston in the 83rd minute of play. Harold Fraser made in the 87th minute of the game a fairly good throw-in which was taken care of by Danny Gilespie. After having played for 96 minutes, Reece Frissell managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Rangers FC's supporters crossed their fingers, but Reece Frissell was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. The referee blew his whistle, and the match came to a close. The players exchanged shirts and headed down the tunnel. The Rangers FC fans cheered their team off the field, for while De Kasteelheren had put up a good fight, they were unable to come out of the game with any points to show for their effort.
