Bernódus Oddbergsson started the match with the kick off. 5 minutes into the game, Bernódus Oddbergsson was given a yellow card after he appeared to trip an opposing player. Vikingur Reykjavik's manager was livid on the sidelines, but the referee was unmoved and gave Wellington Phoenix the free kick. Bernódus Oddbergsson was extremely unlucky when he, in the 9th minute, took a shot that hit the right post and went out. In the 12th minute, Ernest Rishton left the goalkeeper for dead before tapping the ball into the right side of the net. The Wellington Phoenix fans were clearly happy with the effort and the scoreboard reflected the new score: 0-1. Rögnvaldur Úlfarsson made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Ernest Rishton in the 18th minute of play. Wellington Phoenix's defense didn't have a chance, in the 20th minute, when Hugi Rúnarsson scored to the left of an out of position Jones Byrnes, making the score, 1-1. Jones Byrnes showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Bernódus Oddbergsson, who was totally free with the ball in the 23rd minute. In the 27th match minute, Vikingur Reykjavik was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Myrkvi Birkisson to maneuver through the defense. Jones Byrnes showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Matthías Aronsson in the 30th minute of the match. Rögnvaldur Úlfarsson showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Barth Gorham, who was totally free with the ball in the 31st minute. The crowd rose to their feet as Stórólfur Njálsson kicked a wonderful shot that went in to the left of a diving Jones Byrnes. That made the score 2-1 in the 33 minute of play. With a couple of smart ball manuevers Barth Gorham in the 36th managed to get into a good position. With a left leg Rögnvaldur Úlfarsson saved Vikingur Reykjavik from getting behind. Navin Chapman made in the 40th minute of the game a throw-in that took a bad bounce and was taken care of by Vikingur Reykjavik's Matthías Aronsson. The supporters of Vikingur Reykjavik booed when Wellington Phoenix was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 43 match minutes in a wonderful position. Randell Blackham didn't get a good kick on the ball. Jones Byrnes made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Bernódus Oddbergsson in the 46th minute of play. Af the end of the first half the score was 2-1. The first half had gone as expected for the home team.

The wind increased when Barth Gorham made the kick off in the second half. With a couple of smart ball manuevers Bryan Hoskin in the 52nd managed to get into a good position. With a left leg Rögnvaldur Úlfarsson saved Vikingur Reykjavik from getting behind. 54 minutes into the game, Vikingur Reykjavik's Hugi Rúnarsson nearly tore a hole in the net with a booming shot. Jones Byrnes made a valiant effort, but he could not reach the ball in time, 3-1. After 58 minutes of play, Wellington Phoenix's Ernest Rishton made it 3-2 when he simply outclassed the defender marking him and hit a curling shot into the right side of the net. Rögnvaldur Úlfarsson was left in no man's land by his defense there! Bryan Hoskin sent away a hard shot on goal in the 61st minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. After a rather tough play, Wellington Phoenix's Stephan Smee got a free kick in the 62nd minute. William Gunnsteinsson received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 63rd minute. Jones Byrnes tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. Jones Byrnes showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Matthías Aronsson in the 65th minute of the match. 67 minutes into the game, Ernest Rishton cracked a shot to the right of the goalkeeper, 3-3. Rögnvaldur Úlfarsson was not in position, and could only watch the ball fly in. In the 70th minute, Barth Gorham got an opportunity to score, but he didn't get a solid hit on the ball and ended up kicking it wide of the goal. Rafnar Friðriksson made in the 82nd minute of the game a fairly good throw-in which was taken care of by Auðunn Kristófersson. With an all-out effort, Wellington Phoenix's Rögnvaldur Úlfarsson threw himself towards the right post 88 minutes into the match and grabbed hold of the ball from Jonty Heath, which otherwise would have been placed in the net. Bryan Hoskin fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 90th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Rögnvaldur Úlfarsson having to interfere. If Bryan Hoskin had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 92nd minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. When Wellington Phoenix's Barth Gorham, in the 94th minute, received a pass right in front of the net, it looked like a certain goal, but his shot went outside. A wasted opportunity for Wellington Phoenix. The second half was just like the first, even and exciting. The match ended in a draw.
