An unexpectedly hard shot by Joris Tijs in the 12th minute of play forced Cesate's goalkeeper Antonio Talone to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. After some careless play in the Cesate defense, Steff Winnepenninck kicked a shot that curved into the net to the right of Antonio Talone. The Cesate fans voiced their displeasure as they felt that Antonio Talone should have stopped the shot. Antonio Talone took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Joris Tijs, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. Genk's Joris Tijs got a good chance for a goal in the 30th minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. Antonio Talone stood for a superb save when he managed to get hold of Joris Tijs's shot from short distance in the 31st minute. Donato Carlini sent away a hard shot on goal in the 32nd minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. Dario Palermo fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 34th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Jordi Peten having to interfere. In the 36th minute, Cesate's Dario Palermo ran free of his marker and smoothly shot the ball into the goal behind Jordi Peten. Jordi Peten yelled at his defense, as they had left him out to dry. 1-2. Antonio Talone came out of the goal in the 42nd minute to try and stop a shot by Genk's Ivo De Backer. But to his dismay, Ivo De Backer quickly shot the ball in between his legs and into the goal making it 1-3. Robby de Koninck took a chance and fired a shot far from the goal in the 45th minute, but it turned out to be a dangerous situation for Antonio Talone. Cesate's goalkeeper really had to stretch himself to stop the ball from crossing the goal line. Steff Winnepenninck scored 1-4 in the 46th match minute with a shot that went into the goal to the right of Antonio Talone, who was just a little too slow in reacting to the shot. Even after changing tactics the home team jogged off the field with a 1-4 deficit. They would have to work harder if they wanted to turn things around in the second half.

Both teams looked relatively alert before the second half when the referee blew his whistle to tell Dario Palermo to make the kick off. 54 minutes into the match, Genk's goal looked a bit too open when Alfredo Caruso came free, but Jordi Peten reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. After 58 played minutes Cesate got a freekick which was hit by Donato Carlini. The supporters of Genk booed when Cesate was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 85 match minutes in a wonderful position. Concetto Picca didn't get a good kick on the ball. Jordi Peten made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Alfredo Caruso in the 89th minute of play.
