Horea Vulcănescu fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 4th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Uwe Ziege having to interfere. In the 7th minute, Hugo Haupt hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. The audience thought a goal was coming when Arne Stensson got free with Uwe Ziege in the 8th minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. Rot-Weiss-Essen's Uwe Ziege proved his good apprehension of play when he, in the 11th minute of the match, managed to save Rot-Weiss-Essen from getting a goal against them. Through an outstanding action, after 15 minutes, Uwe Ziege successfully got his hands on the ball before it slid into the goal at the right post. 18 minutes into the match, G A I S's goal looked a bit too open when Octavian Basten came free, but Staffan Eckegren reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. Staffan Eckegren took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Mesut Özil, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. G A I S's Staffan Eckegren played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Octavian Basten in the 28th minute of play. When Arne Stensson came up free with the goalie in the 33rd minute, the G A I S fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Arne Stensson couldn't finish the play. When Flavio Canal fell near the penalty area in the 36th minute he thought he would be awarded a free kick. The referee ignored Rot-Weiss-Essen's protests and gave Flavio Canal a yellow card for diving instead. In the 37th match minute, Rot-Weiss-Essen was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Flavio Canal to maneuver through the defense. Uwe Ziege was out of position in the 39 minute of play, and Arne Stensson capitalized on the mistake with a soft shot into the goal. Arne Stensson really showed his touch with that goal: 1-0. If Arne Stensson had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 41st minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. Af the end of the first half the score was 1-0. The first half had gone as expected for the home team.

When the second half was about to start, both teams quickly lined up and Octavian Basten made a kick off. Hugo Haupt could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 51st minute of the match, but Staffan Eckegren made a huge save. With a little luck, G A I S's Staffan Eckegren got control of the ball when Octavian Basten tried to sneak it across the goal line. Octavian Basten blasted a shot towards the goal in the 53rd minute, but the shot hit the top of the crossbar and went out without Staffan Eckegren having to make a save. 54 minutes into the match, G A I S's goal looked a bit too open when Mesut Özil came free, but Staffan Eckegren reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. The supporters of G A I S booed when Rot-Weiss-Essen was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 61 match minutes in a wonderful position. Anestis Kotsopoulos didn't get a good kick on the ball. Uwe Ziege showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Arne Stensson, who was totally free with the ball in the 68th minute. Staffan Eckegren showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Octavian Basten in the 69th minute of the match. The G A I S fans' excitement grew in the 70th match minute when G A I S's Arne Stensson looked to have a clear shot with the ball near the goal. The shot wasn't hard, but the ball still rolled over the goal line to make it 2-0 before the goalkeeper had a chance to intervene. In the 78th match minute, Rot-Weiss-Essen was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Maximilian Henning to maneuver through the defense. Uwe Ziege made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Arne Stensson in the 79th minute of play. An unexpectedly hard shot by Octavian Basten in the 82nd minute of play forced G A I S's goalkeeper Staffan Eckegren to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Horea Vulcănescu recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 90th minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. Uwe Ziege took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Arne Stensson, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. 95 minutes into the match, Rot-Weiss-Essen's goal looked a bit too open when Arne Stensson came free, but Uwe Ziege reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. Arne Stensson took the ball and in the 95 minute, shot a rapid shot to the right of a surprised Uwe Ziege. Uwe Ziege dived to the right, and did manage to get a hand on the shot, but it still went into the right corner making it 3-0. G A I S were really happy, having secured the victory after a very even contest. They thanked the players of Rot-Weiss-Essen for a fine match.
