In the 8th minute of the match Velez sarsfield got a corner. Astillero del Guayas's goalie ran out to the linesman to protest the call, but the linesman resolutely pointed his flag at the cornerflag. Fabio Regis ran over to the corner to take the kick. After a rather tough play, Velez sarsfield's Emil Zbytniewski got a free kick in the 9th minute. In the 11th minute the ball was on its way in behind Astillero del Guayas's goalkeeper Nacho González, but with the help of a sacrificing defense, he could catch the ball at the crossbar. Nacho González stood for a superb save when he managed to get hold of Qin Kun Xi's shot from short distance in the 12th minute. Qin Kun Xi recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 14th minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. Thanks to some nice foot action and superb ball handling Mattias Svan in the 16th minute a chance for a shot on goal. With an extended leg and a bit of luck Narciso Frechoso prevented the ball from getting in the gole. Qin Kun Xi got in the 19th a clear chance and fired away a hard shot against goal, but Nacho González handled the situation perfectly and made a save by the crossbar. Astillero del Guayas's Nacho González proved his good apprehension of play when he, in the 21st minute of the match, managed to save Astillero del Guayas from getting a goal against them. Qin Kun Xi sent away a hard shot on goal in the 22nd minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. If Qin Kun Xi had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 24th minute. The ball went over the crossbar instead. An unexpectedly hard shot by Qin Kun Xi in the 24th minute of play forced Astillero del Guayas's goalkeeper Nacho González to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Narciso Frechoso took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Xaiver Ascarretazabal, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. Nacho González showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Qin Kun Xi, who was totally free with the ball in the 28th minute. In the 30th minute Xaiver Ascarretazabal shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Narciso Frechoso saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. In the 33rd match minute, Astillero del Guayas was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Gustav Vinström to maneuver through the defense. After 35 played minutes Velez sarsfield got a freekick which was hit by Valentin Lico. After 44 played minutes Astillero del Guayas got a freekick which was hit by Clóvis Lima. 46 minutes into the game, Raphael Leo was given a yellow card after he appeared to trip an opposing player. Velez sarsfield's manager was livid on the sidelines, but the referee was unmoved and gave Astillero del Guayas the free kick. Raphael Leo kicked well hit freekick during the 46th minute of the match. Bagui Lizana took a chance and fired a shot far from the goal in the 47th minute, but it turned out to be a dangerous situation for Narciso Frechoso. Velez sarsfield's goalkeeper really had to stretch himself to stop the ball from crossing the goal line. The supporters of Astillero del Guayas booed when Velez sarsfield was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 48 match minutes in a wonderful position. Benjamin Orixe didn't get a good kick on the ball. In the 50th minute of the match Bagui Lizana sent off a long shot with destination to the right of the goalkeeper, but Narciso Frechoso skillfully saved the ball. After fighting hard for a draw in the first half, the players were able to take a much needed rest.

Nacho González was clearly disgusted with the effort of the defense and let the defenders know about it. Walter Pico might have been able to make a better finish in the 72nd minute when he tried to place a hard shot over Nacho González. Instead the ball went over the crossbar and out. Walter Pico ran back to his position shaking his head. In the 78th minute, Walter Pico ran past the defenders and hit a shot which went straight ahead into goal. Nacho González was frozen by the shot and now it was 3-0. Nacho González had in the 82ndth minute some difficulties stopping Fabio Regis's well aimed penalty as it nearly passed him on his left side, but he still managed to hold the ball. In the 85th minute, Clóvis Lima hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. Nacho González showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Walter Pico in the 87th minute of the match. Velez sarsfield's Narciso Frechoso played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Amin Kurd in the 88th minute of play. In the 90th minute of the match Astillero del Guayas got a corner. For all the effort they put into the match, the Astillero del Guayas players left disappointed. They had fought hard, but couldn't break down the home team's defense. The match ended in a win for Velez sarsfield.
