The referee saw this and, surprisingly, showed Darius Bontine the red card, dismissing him from the pitch. The coaching staff of Rangers FC protested bitterly, but the referee would have none of it, and Darius Bontine had no choice but to slowly walk off the pitch. In the 3rd minute, one of Rangers FC:s players had the ball in front of the goal but got pushed and fell. The referee felt it was an obvious case and blew a penalty for Rangers FC. In the 5th minute there was a penalty for SK Mons. Leif Olofsson stepped forward and shot the ball to the right of a diving Fergus Fairbairn. 1-0. Ruben Smidts scored 2-0 in the 12th match minute with a shot that went into the goal to the right of Fergus Fairbairn, who was just a little too slow in reacting to the shot. Fergus Fairbairn showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Ruben Smidts in the 18th minute of the match. Fergus Fairbairn showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Leif Olofsson in the 19th minute of the match. Fergus Fairbairn came out of the goal in the 20th minute to try and stop a shot by SK Mons's Peng Xu. But to his dismay, Peng Xu quickly shot the ball in between his legs and into the goal making it 3-0. After some careless play in the Rangers FC defense, Ruben Smidts kicked a shot that curved into the net to the right of Fergus Fairbairn. The Rangers FC fans voiced their displeasure as they felt that Fergus Fairbairn should have stopped the shot. Nick Daniels hit a great freekick 29 minutes into the match. After 31 played minutes, Rangers FC's Ryan McIver shot from a long distance, and at first it looked like the ball was going into the goal, but the goalkeeper Alex Pihl came through and got his fingers on the ball before it flew over the goal line. He then quickly gripped the ball tighter before the forwards in Rangers FC reached it. 33 minutes into the match, Cornel Ulici notched a goal, 5-0, to the right of Rangers FC's Fergus Fairbairn. Fergus Fairbairn was clearly disgusted with the effort of the defense and let the defenders know about it. Fergus Fairbairn was a little too slow when Leif Olofsson got a fine hit on the ball which went right into the goal in the 38th minute. The score was now 6-0. Fergus Fairbairn made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Cornel Ulici in the 42nd minute of play. In the 44th minute, Leif Olofsson hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. A collision led to Rangers FC getting a freekick after 47 minutes play. Harold Fraser hit a great ball. In the game's 48th minute SK Mons's Peng Xu took a hard shot from long distance, a kick which went into the net just to the right of Fergus Fairbairn and thus the score was 7-0. All the noise was coming from the home fans when the whistle went for half-time. The home team had fought hardest to put themselves in a deserved lead.

When the second half was about to start, both teams quickly lined up and Cornel Ulici made a kick off. Rangers FC's Fergus Fairbairn played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Leif Olofsson in the 55th minute of play. Fergus Fairbairn showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Leif Olofsson in the 57th minute of the match. Thanks to some nice foot action and superb ball handling Cornel Ulici in the 60th minute a chance for a shot on goal. With an extended leg and a bit of luck Fergus Fairbairn prevented the ball from getting in the gole. In the 64th match minute, SK Mons was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Nick Daniels to maneuver through the defense. SK Mons made a substitution. Lennart Libesoons replaced Nick Daniels. After a rather tough play, SK Mons's Nick Daniels got a free kick in the 65th minute. Rangers FC's Raymond Johnston got a good chance for a goal in the 66th minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. 70 minutes into the game, Cornel Ulici cracked a shot to the right of the goalkeeper, 8-0. Fergus Fairbairn was not in position, and could only watch the ball fly in. In the 74th match minute, Rangers FC was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Ron McLeish to maneuver through the defense. After 76 minutes of play, SK Mons's Cornel Ulici made it 9-0 when he simply outclassed the defender marking him and hit a curling shot into the right side of the net. Fergus Fairbairn was left in no man's land by his defense there! In the 79th minute Leif Olofsson shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Fergus Fairbairn saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Fergus Fairbairn made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Leif Olofsson in the 82nd minute of play. Fergus Fairbairn took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Cornel Ulici, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. The supporters of SK Mons booed when Rangers FC was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 88 match minutes in a wonderful position. Raymond Johnston didn't get a good kick on the ball. After 95 played minutes SK Mons got a freekick which was hit by Ulisses Sá. In the 98th minute Cornel Ulici shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Fergus Fairbairn saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. It was no surprise that this one had ended in a win for the home team. SK Mons had played much better football throughout.
