Olavo Vasconcelos showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Ron McLeish in the 42nd minute of the match. The referee was alert and spotted a serious foul by Dinei Moraes during the 44th minute. The player immediately received a yellow card. A collision led to Desportiva Paulo Afonso getting a freekick after 44 minutes play. Dinei Moraes hit a great ball. When the referee blew for the end of the half the home team players were clearly happier, as they went in to the break leading 2-0.

The players of the home team were most fresh-looking when they entered the field to play the second half. Alexander McCabe was the one to do the kick off. Desportiva Paulo Afonso's Olavo Vasconcelos played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Alexander McCabe in the 51st minute of play. In the 54th minute Ron McLeish shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Olavo Vasconcelos saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Francisco Garcia received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 57th minute. Fergus Fairbairn tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. In the 59th match minute, Desportiva Paulo Afonso was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Artur Rezende to maneuver through the defense. Fergus Fairbairn made an important save on a dangerous shot by Renatinho Braga in the 91st minute. After having played for 92 minutes, Renatinho Braga managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Desportiva Paulo Afonso's supporters crossed their fingers, but Renatinho Braga was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. 94 minutes into the match, Desportiva Paulo Afonso's goal looked a bit too open when Ron McLeish came free, but Olavo Vasconcelos reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. Desportiva Paulo Afonso's players left the field with heads hung low after losing a match that had been finely balanced throughout.
