With his leg Uwe Ziege managed to avoid a goal in the 24thth minute, when Azulgranas AFC's Juan Manuel Cruz fired away a shot with a lot of spin towards his right hand side. In the 27th minute, Mateo Transito fired away a killer shot towards the goal that, to the delight of Uwe Ziege, passed just outside the right post. 28 minutes into the match, Azulgranas AFC's goal looked a bit too open when Mesut Özil came free, but Leo Henric reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. Leo Henric made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Hugo Haupt in the 29th minute of play. Uwe Ziege made a fantastic save in the 30th minute, when Juan Manuel Cruz sent off a good shot on target. After a very even first half the match was still tied. The players went to their respective dressing rooms to discuss the tactics for the second half.

The wind increased when Octavian Basten made the kick off in the second half. 56 minutes into the game, Hugo Haupt cracked a shot to the right of the goalkeeper, 1-2. Leo Henric was not in position, and could only watch the ball fly in. In the 61st minute Azulgranas AFC were awarded a corner. Radomir Naskrent went to the cornerflag to take it. An unexpectedly hard shot by Mateo Transito in the 62nd minute of play forced Rot-Weiss-Essen's goalkeeper Uwe Ziege to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. After some fancy dribbling in the 63rd minute, Juan Manuel Cruz managed to get in a good position for a shot. Azulgranas AFC's supporters rose to their feet, but Juan Manuel Cruz was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Uwe Ziege breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. Uwe Ziege came out of the goal and Juan Manuel Cruz tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play.
