Raimundo Delgado took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Stig-Arne Ödman, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. After a rather tough play, Garanhão do SUL's Luís Figo got a free kick in the 11th minute. The supporters of Garanhão do SUL booed when AC Mayonnaise was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 13 match minutes in a wonderful position. Herman Forsman didn't get a good kick on the ball. 15 minutes into the game, Silvério Sabrosa was given a yellow card after he appeared to trip an opposing player. Garanhão do SUL's manager was livid on the sidelines, but the referee was unmoved and gave AC Mayonnaise the free kick. With a little luck, AC Mayonnaise's Valdemar Jönsson got control of the ball when Patrício Poças tried to sneak it across the goal line. After having played for 29 minutes, Silvério Sabrosa managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Garanhão do SUL's supporters crossed their fingers, but Silvério Sabrosa was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. 40 minutes into the match, Garanhão do SUL's goal looked a bit too open when Oscar Holmberg came free, but Raimundo Delgado reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. After 41 minutes of play Garanhão do SUL's Luís Figo was too eager in his attempt to stop his opponent and brought him down. With that he got his second yellow card and was ordered off the ground. After 42 played minutes Garanhão do SUL got a freekick which was hit by Luís Figo. Garanhão do SUL's Raimundo Delgado played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Oscar Holmberg in the 47th minute of play. Luck had favoured the away team in the first, and they walked off with a 0-1 lead.

The players of the home team were most fresh-looking when they entered the field to play the second half. Patrício Poças was the one to do the kick off. After 52 minutes, Herman Forsman mouthed his way into the referee's book. The tension between the AC Mayonnaise and the Garanhão do SUL players grew even worse after the yellow card.
