Independiente was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Conrad Carrington to maneuver through the defense. Jim Mitchell took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Conrad Carrington, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. Gilbert Guzman fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 36th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Jim Mitchell having to interfere. Darryl Pollard hit a great freekick 40 minutes into the match. Claudio Arzeno took a chance and fired a shot far from the goal in the 41st minute, but it turned out to be a dangerous situation for Jim Mitchell. Santos FC's goalkeeper really had to stretch himself to stop the ball from crossing the goal line. Jim Mitchell made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Conrad Carrington in the 42nd minute of play. When Rodney Urbina came up free with the goalie in the 43rd minute, the C. A. Independiente fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Rodney Urbina couldn't finish the play. A collision led to Santos FC getting a freekick after 44 minutes play. Darryl Pollard hit a great ball. Jim Mitchell stood for a superb save when he managed to get hold of Conrad Carrington's shot from short distance in the 47th minute. The fans had the chance to grab some refreshments as the whistle went for half-time. The score stood at 0-0 after a close first half.

The players of the away team seemed most concentrated when Lawrence Smart stepped up to make the kick off in the second half. After a rather tough play, Santos FC's Jamar Burton got a free kick in the 57th minute. Kelly Stovall made in the 59th minute of the game a quick throw-in and Jamar Burton immediately put the ball in play. Thanks to some nice moves Rodney Urbina could shoot a difficult shot in the 63rd minute, which Jim Mitchell however easily saved by the left post. An unexpectedly hard shot by Flint Prince in the 71st minute of play forced Santos FC's goalkeeper Jim Mitchell to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. After 72 played minutes C. A. Independiente got a freekick which was hit by Claudio Arzeno. Rusty Little fired away a difficult shot at goal in the 74th minute. He almost succeeded, but the ball bounced in the crossbar and then went out. It was a very nice shot. Santos FC's defense didn't have a chance, in the 80th minute, when Conrad Carrington scored to the left of an out of position Jim Mitchell, making the score, 0-1. Conrad Carrington received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 89th minute. Jim Mitchell tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. After 94 played minutes C. A. Independiente got a freekick which was hit by Wallace Whatley.
