Brian Aguirre started the match with the kick off. Ermegildo Rico's late challenge caught a Sporting de Gijón's player on the shin and left him crawling around in pain. The referee blew his whistle and produced the yellow card. Ermegildo Rico helped the player get up and apologised. After a rather tough play, Cardiff City FC's Ermegildo Rico got a free kick in the 3rd minute. Fabricio Egun kicked well hit freekick during the 4th minute of the match. Angelino Pelagius recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 5th minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. An unexpectedly hard shot by Casimiro Galindo in the 8th minute of play forced Cardiff City FC's goalkeeper Filomeno Rencio to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Filomeno Rencio showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Brian Aguirre, who was totally free with the ball in the 9th minute. Filomeno Rencio showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Brian Aguirre in the 11th minute of the match. Ulises Bidari hit a great freekick 12 minutes into the match. In the 13th minute of the match Angelino Pelagius sent off a long shot with destination to the right of the goalkeeper, but Filomeno Rencio skillfully saved the ball. In the 15th minute, Cardiff City FC's Oscar Blai dribbled the ball into the box and hit a shot with the outside of his foot, sending the keeper the wrong way. 1-0. Filomeno Rencio took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Brian Aguirre, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. 19 minutes into the match, Cardiff City FC's goal looked a bit too open when Casimiro Galindo came free, but Filomeno Rencio reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. The supporters of Cardiff City FC booed when Sporting de Gijón was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 22 match minutes in a wonderful position. Kevin Zenón didn't get a good kick on the ball. After a rather tough play, Cardiff City FC's Martin Licerio got a free kick in the 26th minute. If Angelino Pelagius had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 27th minute. The ball went over the crossbar instead. In the 29th minute, Brian Aguirre made a precise shot to the right of Filomeno Rencio. Cardiff City FC's defense was at fault, and the scoreboard reflected the new score, 1-1. Filomeno Rencio showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Brian Aguirre in the 33rd minute of the match. A collision led to Cardiff City FC getting a freekick after 37 minutes play. Placido Michael hit a great ball. Casimiro Galindo recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 42nd minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. After a very even first half the match was still tied. The players went to their respective dressing rooms to discuss the tactics for the second half.

Sporting de Gijón's Alberto Conrao was substituted for Blas Urdin. The wind increased when Ermegildo Rico made the kick off in the second half. Angelino Pelagius received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 53rd minute. Filomeno Rencio tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. In the 56th minute Brian Aguirre shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Filomeno Rencio saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. 59 minutes into the game, Casimiro Galindo cracked a shot to the right of the goalkeeper, 1-2. Filomeno Rencio was not in position, and could only watch the ball fly in. Cardiff City FC's Filomeno Rencio played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Brian Aguirre in the 70th minute of play. After a rather tough play, Sporting de Gijón's Dalmacio Castel got a free kick in the 70th minute. Alberto Conrao was shown his second yellow card after 73 minutes, following a rather ugly tackle on opponent. That was the end of his participation in the match. Cardiff City FC's Albano Quinito got a good chance for a goal in the 78th minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. Ariel Urbasa made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Oscar Blai in the 80th minute of play. In the 80th minute, Angelino Pelagius hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. In the 83rdth minute of the game Ermegildo Rico who was perfectly placed tried to make a shot on goal, but Sporting de Gijón's Ariel Urbasa was lucky and managed to grab hold of the ball. Oscar Blai received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 96th minute. Ariel Urbasa tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. Sporting de Gijón played a much better game than Cardiff City FC and deserved their victory. The Cardiff City FC players were clearly disappointed as they left the ground.
