In the 11th minute, Wellington Phoenix's Belmiro Teixeira seemed to kick out at an opponent. The referee saw this and, surprisingly, showed Belmiro Teixeira the red card, dismissing him from the pitch. The coaching staff of Wellington Phoenix protested bitterly, but the referee would have none of it, and Belmiro Teixeira had no choice but to slowly walk off the pitch. Thanks to some nice foot action and superb ball handling Amadeu Maranhense in the 31st minute a chance for a shot on goal. With an extended leg and a bit of luck Gilson Arósio prevented the ball from getting in the gole. In the 32nd match minute, Pombal 2003 F.C. was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Luizinho Domingues to maneuver through the defense. In the 34th minute of the match Amadeu Maranhense shot from a long distance. The ball could have gone into the goal to the right of the goalkeeper, but Gilson Arósio showed his good shape when he easily got hold of the ball. The audience was convinced that Mazinho Baptista's extremely hard shot when he got free in front of the goal was going in, but Gilson Arósio was relentless in the 35th minute of the game. Af the end of the first half the score was 1-0. The first half had gone as expected for the home team.
