Aaron Smallwood made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Sidney Forbes in the 4th minute of play. Santos FC's attentive Terence Nicholas managed to snatch the ball when Qiu Fan Ran made a throw-in in the 5th minute of the game. 8 minutes into the game, Sidney Forbes cracked a shot to the right of the goalkeeper, 1-0. Aaron Smallwood was not in position, and could only watch the ball fly in. The supporters of Santos FC booed when C. A. Independiente was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 12 match minutes in a wonderful position. Ryszard Prusinowski didn't get a good kick on the ball. Xu Yun Quan could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 14th minute of the match, but Aaron Smallwood made a huge save. Aaron Smallwood made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Sidney Forbes in the 15th minute of play. 17 minutes into the game, Sidney Forbes recieved a splendid long ball, split the defenders, and gently placed the ball to the left of Aaron Smallwood. Sidney Forbes showed that you don't have to tear a hole in the net to score, 2-0. Claudio Marangoni's shot was meant for the net just under the crossbar, but Aaron Smallwood read the situation well and was quickly in position to make a wonderful save in the 19th minute of play. After some careless play in the C. A. Independiente defense, Lanny Gilmore kicked a shot that curved into the net to the right of Farid Mondragón. The C. A. Independiente fans voiced their displeasure as they felt that Farid Mondragón should have stopped the shot. After a rather tough play, Santos FC's Tyron Velasquez got a free kick in the 23rd minute. Erberk Müftüoğlu kicked well hit freekick during the 25th minute of the match. Santos FC's attacker deliberately struck the ball against an opponent to win a corner for his team. The corner was taken by Warren Ruiz in the 31st minute. In the 33rd minute, C. A. Independiente's Claudio Marangoni ran free of his marker and smoothly shot the ball into the goal behind Aaron Smallwood. Aaron Smallwood yelled at his defense, as they had left him out to dry. 3-1. A sloppy throw-in by Qiu Fan Ran in the 36th minute of the game went astray and was snapped up by Santos FC's Terence Nicholas. Lanny Gilmore hit a great freekick 36 minutes into the match. Lanny Gilmore might have been able to make a better finish in the 39th minute when he tried to place a hard shot over Farid Mondragón. Instead the ball went over the crossbar and out. Lanny Gilmore ran back to his position shaking his head. Thanks to some nice moves Xu Yun Quan could shoot a difficult shot in the 41st minute, which Aaron Smallwood however easily saved by the left post. Xu Yun Quan could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 42nd minute of the match, but Aaron Smallwood made a huge save. 45 minutes into the game, Lanny Gilmore cracked a shot to the right of the goalkeeper, 3-2. Farid Mondragón was not in position, and could only watch the ball fly in. The away team players looked dejected as the walked off the pitch at half time. They had fought hard, but were still losing 3-2.
Aaron Smallwood showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Sidney Forbes, who was totally free with the ball in the 51st minute. In the 56th minute Lanny Gilmore shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Farid Mondragón saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. 58 minutes into the game, one of Santos FC:s players got tackled near the goal, and the referee blew for a penalty. After 63 played minutes Santos FC got a freekick which was hit by Tyron Velasquez. Sidney Forbes's shot was meant for the net just under the crossbar, but Aaron Smallwood read the situation well and was quickly in position to make a wonderful save in the 65th minute of play. An unexpectedly hard shot by Sidney Forbes in the 77th minute of play forced Santos FC's goalkeeper Aaron Smallwood to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Santos FC's Terence Nicholas quite brazenly broke a throw-in by Qiu Fan Ran, made in the 79th minute of the game. The audience thought a goal was coming when Tyron Velasquez got free with Farid Mondragón in the 84th minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. Farid Mondragón took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Tyron Velasquez, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. Farid Mondragón didn't have a chance when a screaming shot from Tyron Velasquez went, in the 86th minute, to the upper right corner, 5-3 was the resulting score. Santos FC's Terence Nicholas managed, thanks to a brazen rush, stole the ball on a throw-in made by Qiu Fan Ran in the 90 minute of the game. In the 91st minute, Terence Nicholas got an opportunity to score, but he didn't get a solid hit on the ball and ended up kicking it wide of the goal. Aaron Smallwood took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Sidney Forbes, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. Warren Ruiz hit a great freekick 95 minutes into the match. Aaron Smallwood made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Sidney Forbes in the 96th minute of play. C. A. Independiente were really happy, having secured the victory after a very even contest. They thanked the players of Santos FC for a fine match.
