The crowd had been anticipating this game for weeks and the excitement in the stadium was easily visible. Barões F. C.'s Júlio Baiano played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Luis Mikolas in the 3rd minute of play. Pedro Paulo Queirós's shot was meant for the net just under the crossbar, but Luiz Paulo Mazza read the situation well and was quickly in position to make a wonderful save in the 5th minute of play. In the 6th minute of the match Barões F. C. got a corner. Wellington Phoenix's goalie ran out to the linesman to protest the call, but the linesman resolutely pointed his flag at the cornerflag. Donato Paraibano ran over to the corner to take the kick. After taking down the ball on Barões F. C.'s corner Laurencio Vidal fired away a hard shot, but the defenders efficiently covered the most dangerous angles and Luiz Paulo Mazza quite easily take care of the ball. In the 73rd minute, Vito Cosme got an opportunity to score, but he didn't get a solid hit on the ball and ended up kicking it wide of the goal. The players exchanged shirts and headed down the tunnel. The Wellington Phoenix fans cheered their team off the field, for while Barões F. C. had put up a good fight, they were unable to come out of the game with any points to show for their effort.
