The audience thought a goal was coming when Gilmar Romero got free with Afonso Vargas in the 21st minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. 25 minutes into the game, Zé Carlos Pernambucano recieved a splendid long ball, split the defenders, and gently placed the ball to the left of Afonso Vargas. Zé Carlos Pernambucano showed that you don't have to tear a hole in the net to score, 2-1. Afonso Vargas made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Gilmar Romero in the 30th minute of play. In the 31st minute Téo Pires shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Afonso Vargas saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. The supporters of Grêmio 20 Julho booed when Brazil Academy was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 33 match minutes in a wonderful position. Dino Senna didn't get a good kick on the ball. Zé Carlos Pernambucano fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 34th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Afonso Vargas having to interfere. Gildo Braga hit a great freekick 40 minutes into the match. A collision led to Brazil Academy getting a freekick after 41 minutes play. Joélson Barbosa hit a great ball. The home fans were very happy to see their team leading 2-1 at half-time.
When the second half was about to start, both teams quickly lined up and Daniel Amaral made a kick off. 54 minutes into the match, Grêmio 20 Julho's goal looked a bit too open when Daniel Amaral came free, but Hudson Motta reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. A nice corner shot did that Humberto Soeiro got away a dangerous shot. Despite this Afonso Vargas quite easily got ahold of the ball to make the save. Grêmio 20 Julho's Zé Carlos Pernambucano quite brazenly broke a throw-in by Célio Dante, made in the 73rd minute of the game. Afonso Vargas showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Valdemar de Amaral, who was totally free with the ball in the 74th minute. Grêmio 20 Julho's Hudson Motta played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Marcelo Mangueira in the 79th minute of play. Brazil Academy were furious when Dino Senna was red carded, 81 minutes into the game, but the referee dismissed their protests.
