But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Venancio Abalos couldn't finish the play. Wlodzimierz Wlodyga fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 33rd minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Uwe Ziege having to interfere. Rot-Weiss-Essen's Uwe Ziege played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Zlatko Goričan in the 39th minute of play. In the 40th minute, Maurizio Brink hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. Konstantin Pančur showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Vasco Jackisch in the 44th minute of the match. The home fans were very happy to see their team leading 1-0 at half-time.

The players of the home team were most fresh-looking when they entered the field to play the second half. Hektor Krieglmeier was the one to do the kick off.
