Jon Iruegas showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Poul Stanković in the 14th minute of the match. 21 minutes into the match, Fernanco Peso had an open shot that he just couldn't miss and scored to the right of Santo Lano. Clube Audax Metropolitano's manager could be seen yelling to the referee that Fernanco Peso was offside, but the referee ignored the protest. 1-0. The supporters of Sporting Cristal booed when Clube Audax Metropolitano was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 39 match minutes in a wonderful position. After a defensive mix-up in Sporting Cristal's zone, Emirşah Berkman stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Jon Iruegas came out of the goal and Emirşah Berkman tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. The audience thought a goal was coming when Poul Stanković got free with Jon Iruegas in the 54th minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. In the 58th minute Fernanco Peso shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Santo Lano saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line.
