The crowd had been anticipating this game for weeks and the excitement in the stadium was easily visible. After a rather tough play, Rot-Weiss-Essen's Ingmar Stempfle got a free kick in the 3rd minute. Zielonka Gdansk's Jarūnas Saponka got a good chance for a goal in the 4th minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. Jan Tomaszewski showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Anestis Kotsopoulos, who was totally free with the ball in the 6th minute. Jan Tomaszewski took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Octavian Basten, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. 9 minutes into the match, Zielonka Gdansk's goalkeeper Jan Tomaszewski had to clear away a ball on his right side after a cunning shot by Mesut Özil. 13 minutes into the match, Leszek Falke had an open shot that he just couldn't miss and scored to the right of Uwe Ziege. Rot-Weiss-Essen's manager could be seen yelling to the referee that Leszek Falke was offside, but the referee ignored the protest. 0-1. If Leszek Falke had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 18th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. Zielonka Gdansk's Jan Tomaszewski proved his good apprehension of play when he, in the 22nd minute of the match, managed to save Zielonka Gdansk from getting a goal against them. Rot-Weiss-Essen:s Uwe Ziege showed great skill when he stopped Jarūnas Saponka:s penalty. Uwe Ziege stood for a superb save when he managed to get hold of Leszek Falke's shot from short distance in the 30th minute. Mesut Özil struck a weak shot in the 31st minute. Jan Tomaszewski didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for Rot-Weiss-Essen. Uwe Ziege showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Cyprian Sitko in the 40th minute of the match. Jan Tomaszewski made an important save on a dangerous shot by Octavian Basten in the 43rd minute. Luck had favoured the away team in the first, and they walked off with a 0-1 lead.

When the second half was about to start, both teams quickly lined up and Octavian Basten made a kick off. After some careless play in the Zielonka Gdansk defense, Octavian Basten kicked a shot that curved into the net to the right of Jan Tomaszewski. The Zielonka Gdansk fans voiced their displeasure as they felt that Jan Tomaszewski should have stopped the shot. When Zielonka Gdansk's Qiu Ling Lang in the 55th minute got a chance for a shot 55th didn't hesitate and placed the ball to the right of the goalie. A beautiful save bye Rot-Weiss-Essen's goalie prevented a goal. Uwe Ziege made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Qiu Ling Lang in the 62nd minute of play. In the 63rd minute Zielonka Gdansk were awarded a corner. Jarūnas Saponka went to the cornerflag to take it. Jarūnas Saponka made a great header on Zielonka Gdansk's corner, it was just that Rot-Weiss-Essen's Uwe Ziege managed to reach the ball for a save. Cyprian Sitko fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 64th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Uwe Ziege having to interfere. Zielonka Gdansk made a substitution. Ganga Banga replaced Gottfrid Asklöv. The audience was convinced that Leszek Falke's extremely hard shot when he got free in front of the goal was going in, but Uwe Ziege was relentless in the 74th minute of the game. Zielonka Gdansk's supporters rose to their feet, but Leszek Falke was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Uwe Ziege breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. In the 91st minute, Maximilian Henning hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. Zielonka Gdansk's Qiu Ling Lang got a good chance for a goal in the 92nd minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. The supporters of Rot-Weiss-Essen booed when Zielonka Gdansk was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 93 match minutes in a wonderful position. Ganga Banga didn't get a good kick on the ball. A collision led to Zielonka Gdansk getting a freekick after 94 minutes play. Andreas Billing hit a great ball. In the 95th minute of the match Maximilian Henning sent off a long shot with destination to the right of the goalkeeper, but Jan Tomaszewski skillfully saved the ball. The Zielonka Gdansk players were relieved to hear the final whistle blow to end the match. The away crowd was happy to see their team win after a very tight game.
