Octavian Basten's shot was meant for the net just under the crossbar, but Jimmy Olsson read the situation well and was quickly in position to make a wonderful save in the 18th minute of play. The ball was on its way into the goal to the left of him when he managed to stretch himself and save the shot and avoid a goal. The supporters of Rot-Weiss-Essen booed when Linköpings AIK was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 35 match minutes in a wonderful position. Stefan Blomqvist didn't get a good kick on the ball. The break gave the players a chance to catch their breath, whilst the managers went over the tactics with them again.

The players of the away team seemed most concentrated when Arvid Carlsson stepped up to make the kick off in the second half. In the 80th minute, Nils Svensson hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. Thanks to some nice moves Octavian Basten could shoot a difficult shot in the 82nd minute, which Jimmy Olsson however easily saved by the left post. When Octavian Basten came up free with the goalie in the 82nd minute, the Rot-Weiss-Essen fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Octavian Basten couldn't finish the play. In the 84th minute Arvid Carlsson shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but August Hoffmanns saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Thanks to some nice foot action and superb ball handling Arvid Carlsson in the 93rd minute a chance for a shot on goal. With an extended leg and a bit of luck August Hoffmanns prevented the ball from getting in the gole. Anestis Kotsopoulos received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 97th minute. Jimmy Olsson tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. The Rot-Weiss-Essen supporters could be heard counting down the last seconds of the match. They errupted in celebration when the whistle blew, knowing Rot-Weiss-Essen would go home with victory in their luggage after a match that easily could have ended differently.
