After 13 minutes Sporting de Gijón's defender was forced to head the ball over the line for a corner. It was Florian Pruss who took care of the corner kick. An unexpectedly hard shot by Matias Bilintx in the 17th minute of play forced VILLARREAL UNITED's goalkeeper Baraxil Sarrate to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Óscar Cordoba stood for a superb save when he managed to get hold of Valentin Voicu's shot from short distance in the 19th minute. In the 21st minute, Valentin Voicu ran past the defenders and hit a shot which went straight ahead into goal. Óscar Cordoba was frozen by the shot and now it was 2-0. With a little luck, Sporting de Gijón's Óscar Cordoba got control of the ball when Valentin Voicu tried to sneak it across the goal line. Sporting de Gijón's Óscar Cordoba proved his good apprehension of play when he, in the 26th minute of the match, managed to save Sporting de Gijón from getting a goal against them. A nice corner shot did that Florian Pruss got away a dangerous shot. Despite this Óscar Cordoba quite easily got ahold of the ball to make the save. Valentin Voicu sent away a hard shot on goal in the 31st minute, but the ball hit the crossbar and went out. A very good chance for a goal. Óscar Cordoba made a fantastic save in the 31st minute, when Valentin Voicu sent off a good shot on target. Baraxil Sarrate made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Matias Bilintx in the 32nd minute of play. Sporting de Gijón's defense didn't have a chance, in the 35th minute, when Valentin Voicu scored to the left of an out of position Óscar Cordoba, making the score, 3-0. After a defensive mix-up in VILLARREAL UNITED's zone, Wayne Rooney stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Baraxil Sarrate came out of the goal and Wayne Rooney tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. A throw-in in the 42nd minute of the game was made by Atilano Feo with Diego Maradona as target, who quickly passed the ball forward. The home fans were very happy to see their team leading 3-0 at half-time.

Sporting de Gijón's Saturnino Curcio was substituted for Kauan de Barros. Sporting de Gijón made a substitution. Carolo Ovando replaced Venancio Emesto. The hometeam waved at the audience when it was time for Matias Bilintx to strike the kick off in the second half. With a couple of smart ball manuevers Valentin Voicu in the 59th managed to get into a good position. With a left leg Óscar Cordoba saved Sporting de Gijón from getting behind. A well-hit corner resulted in Nofre Madariaga heading the ball towards the goal, but to his dismay he misdirected it and missed the goal completely.
