Emil Marissen charged in rather forcefully in the 3rd minute of the match, and managed to knock his opponent down. The referee showed Emil Marissen the yellow card, and asked the players to shake hands before continuing play. Emil Marissen hit a great freekick 3 minutes into the match. Sebastian Kullig struck a weak shot in the 12th minute. Alvise Spione didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for Hamburger SV. Ferruccio Galeone hit a great freekick 13 minutes into the match. Faenza's Aurelio Bencivenni couldn't find anyone to pass the ball to, so he shot a long shot towards the goal in the 23rd minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. Balko Schiewerling stood for a superb save when he managed to get hold of Ennio Di Tullio's shot from short distance in the 32nd minute. Balko Schiewerling made an important save on a dangerous shot by Fabiano Porro in the 33rd minute. Balko Schiewerling was out of position in the 37 minute of play, and Fabiano Porro capitalized on the mistake with a soft shot into the goal. Fabiano Porro really showed his touch with that goal: 1-0. Sebastian Kullig sent away a hard shot on goal in the 42nd minute, but the ball hit the crossbar and went out. A very good chance for a goal. 45 minutes into the match, Faenza's Fabiano Porro sent off a blazing shot straight on target, a shot that Balko Schiewerling narrowly saved just below the crossbar. The home fans were very happy to see their team leading 1-0 at half-time.
The wind increased when Karsten Bath made the kick off in the second half. After some fancy dribbling in the 54th minute, Karsten Bath managed to get in a good position for a shot. Hamburger SV's supporters rose to their feet, but Karsten Bath was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Alvise Spione breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. Balko Schiewerling showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Ennio Di Tullio, who was totally free with the ball in the 56th minute. Fabiano Porro scored 2-1 in the 62nd match minute with a shot that went into the goal to the right of Balko Schiewerling, who was just a little too slow in reacting to the shot. An unexpectedly hard shot by Karsten Bath in the 66th minute of play forced Faenza's goalkeeper Alvise Spione to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. 68 minutes into the match, Hamburger SV's goal looked a bit too open when Ennio Di Tullio came free, but Balko Schiewerling reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. Faenza's supporters crossed their fingers, but Ennio Di Tullio was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. After a rather tough play, Faenza's Ferruccio Galeone got a free kick in the 85th minute. If Fabiano Porro had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 90th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. After 92 minutes, Florian Schweers mouthed his way into the referee's book. The tension between the Hamburger SV and the Faenza players grew even worse after the yellow card. The referee blew the whistle for a penalty in the 92nd minute of the game. One of Hamburger SV:s players had nearly got his shirt torn off by an opponent while getting free in front of Faenza:s goal. The referee gave Faenza a penalty, 94 minutes into the game. The penalty shot was made by Aurelio Bencivenni, who made a well placed shot into the net to the right of Hamburger SV's Balko Schiewerling. 3-1. Hamburger SV's players left the field with heads hung low after losing a match that had been finely balanced throughout.
