But to his dismay, Andrea Tofani quickly shot the ball in between his legs and into the goal making it 1-2. When Andrea Tofani fell near the penalty area in the 23rd minute he thought he would be awarded a free kick. The referee ignored I ritirandi di Canaus's protests and gave Andrea Tofani a yellow card for diving instead. A collision led to I ritirandi di Canaus getting a freekick after 23 minutes play. Andrea Tofani hit a great ball. Rozy Kawilarang made in the 26th minute of the game a quick throw-in and Gustavo-Hernán Cabezudo immediately put the ball in play. 34 minutes into the match, Italy's goalkeeper Bruno Antognoni had to clear away a ball on his right side after a cunning shot by Mihail Brânza. Alexsandro Godoi stood for a superb save when he managed to get hold of Armando Natalucci's shot from short distance in the 38th minute. In the 46th match minute, Italy was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Didi Ladron to maneuver through the defense. Bruno Antognoni made a fantastic save in the 48th minute, when Gustavo-Hernán Cabezudo sent off a good shot on target. After the first half Italy were leading 1-2. They had played with great self confidence throughout the first half and fully deserved their lead.

The players of the away team seemed most concentrated when Armando Natalucci stepped up to make the kick off in the second half. An unexpectedly hard shot by Gustavo-Hernán Cabezudo in the 52nd minute of play forced Italy's goalkeeper Bruno Antognoni to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball.
