In the 14th minute Peter Snell shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Santo Lano saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Santo Lano took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Valentin Ivarsson, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. Zafer Hürsel made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Poul Stanković in the 20th minute of play. An unexpectedly hard shot by Maicon Mattos in the 27th minute of play forced FC Zenit Saint Petersburg's goalkeeper Zafer Hürsel to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. In the 29th minute, Peter Snell made a precise shot to the right of Santo Lano. Clube Audax Metropolitano's defense was at fault, and the scoreboard reflected the new score, 1-1. Emirşah Berkman made in the 35th minute of the game a sloppy throw-in which Claudinho Quadros however managed to control. The players of the away team seemed most concentrated when Bjørn Ironside stepped up to make the kick off in the second half. The referee saw this and, surprisingly, showed Herbert Björnberg the red card, dismissing him from the pitch. The coaching staff of FC Zenit Saint Petersburg protested bitterly, but the referee would have none of it, and Herbert Björnberg had no choice but to slowly walk off the pitch.
