The crowd had been anticipating this game for weeks and the excitement in the stadium was easily visible. An unexpectedly hard shot by Lennart Pleschke in the 21st minute of play forced Império Futebol Clube's goalkeeper Gugu Barreto to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. After some careless play in the Gelsenkirchener jungs defense, Olívio Cerezo kicked a shot that curved into the net to the right of Otmar Elsner. Gugu Barreto didn't have a chance when a screaming shot from Ted Habbel went, in the 45th minute, to the upper right corner, 2-1 was the resulting score. The away team players looked dejected as the walked off the pitch at half time. They had fought hard, but were still losing 2-1.

The wind increased when Lennart Pleschke made the kick off in the second half. Otmar Elsner took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Faustão Félix, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. In the 53rd minute, Império Futebol Clube's Jerônimo Varela dribbled the ball into the box and hit a shot with the outside of his foot, sending the keeper the wrong way. 2-2.
