Steaua București's Toader Ipătescu was first on the ball when the corner was shot and he dangerously headed the ball towards goal, but Félix Göbl in the goal jumped up to prevent it from getting in. In the 6th minute, Jonas Zaugg hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. After some fancy dribbling in the 10th minute, Lars Bruckmann managed to get in a good position for a shot. Newcastle United's supporters rose to their feet, but Lars Bruckmann was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Manole Mocanu breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. After 11 minutes, Iordache Arnăutu mouthed his way into the referee's book. The tension between the Steaua București and the Newcastle United players grew even worse after the yellow card. When Gaston von dem Bussche-Haddenhausen came up free with the goalie in the 13th minute, the Newcastle United fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Gaston von dem Bussche-Haddenhausen couldn't finish the play. Félix Göbl didn't have a chance when a screaming shot from Iosif Mitu went, in the 16th minute, to the upper right corner, 1-0 was the resulting score. Jonas Zaugg hit a great freekick 20 minutes into the match. Lars Bruckmann took the ball and in the 24 minute, shot a rapid shot to the right of a surprised Manole Mocanu. Manole Mocanu dived to the right, and did manage to get a hand on the shot, but it still went into the right corner making it 1-1. After having played for 27 minutes, Horia Ionaș managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Steaua București's supporters crossed their fingers, but Horia Ionaș was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. Toader Ipătescu took a chance and fired a shot far from the goal in the 29th minute, but it turned out to be a dangerous situation for Félix Göbl. Newcastle United's goalkeeper really had to stretch himself to stop the ball from crossing the goal line. After a defensive mix-up in Steaua București's zone, Gaston von dem Bussche-Haddenhausen stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Manole Mocanu came out of the goal and Gaston von dem Bussche-Haddenhausen tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. After 33 played minutes Steaua București got a freekick which was hit by Iosif Mitu. After 37 minutes of play, Steaua București's Iosif Mitu made it 2-1 when he simply outclassed the defender marking him and hit a curling shot into the right side of the net. Félix Göbl was left in no man's land by his defense there! When Newcastle United's Lars Bruckmann in the 40th minute got a chance for a shot 40th didn't hesitate and placed the ball to the right of the goalie. A beautiful save bye Steaua București's goalie prevented a goal. If Daniel Feldmann had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 42nd minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. Toader Ipătescu fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 46th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Félix Göbl having to interfere. The supporters of Newcastle United booed when Steaua București was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 47 match minutes in a wonderful position. Iordache Arnăutu didn't get a good kick on the ball. No-one was surprised that the home team were leading 2-1 at half-time.
In the 52nd match minute, Steaua București was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Iordache Arnăutu to maneuver through the defense. 55 minutes into the match, Newcastle United's goal looked a bit too open when Iosif Mitu came free, but Félix Göbl reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. 57 minutes into the game, Bodo Hantzsch threw the ball into play from the sideline. Steaua București's Toader Ipătescu quickly snatched the ball and retained possesion. Félix Göbl made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Iosif Mitu in the 61st minute of play. Manole Mocanu made an important save on a dangerous shot by Daniel Feldmann in the 64th minute. Horia Ionaș sent away a hard shot on goal in the 66th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. When Newcastle United's Lars Bruckmann in the 69th minute got a chance for a shot 69th didn't hesitate and placed the ball to the right of the goalie. A beautiful save bye Steaua București's goalie prevented a goal. Lars Bruckmann recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 72nd minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. Manole Mocanu showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Daniel Feldmann, who was totally free with the ball in the 75th minute. After having played for 83 minutes, Horia Ionaș managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Steaua București's supporters crossed their fingers, but Horia Ionaș was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. Félix Göbl didn't have a chance when a screaming shot from Toader Ipătescu went, in the 84th minute, to the upper right corner, 3-1 was the resulting score. Daniel Feldmann fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 93rd minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Manole Mocanu having to interfere. The crowd rose to their feet and cheered when the referee blew the final whistle. Steaua București had won after a very even match.
