After 10th play minutes Dries Dirckx shot 0-1, a short shot which went by Ariel Urbasa and just under the crossbar into goal. After 16 played minutes Brugge United got a freekick which was hit by Samuel Vervoort. Rudy Panhuijsen made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Brian Aguirre in the 17th minute of play. After 19 played minutes Brugge United got a freekick which was hit by Janes Goons. Christian Meys's late challenge caught a Sporting de Gijón's player on the shin and left him crawling around in pain. The referee blew his whistle and produced the yellow card. Christian Meys helped the player get up and apologised. In the 21st match minute, Brugge United was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Christian Meys to maneuver through the defense. The supporters of Brugge United booed when Sporting de Gijón was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 22 match minutes in a wonderful position. Dalmacio Castel didn't get a good kick on the ball. Brian Aguirre who was well placed in front of the goal fired away a dangerous shot that in the 24thth minute tested the skills of Rudy Panhuijsen when he managed to save the team from getting behind. The Brugge United fans' excitement grew in the 26th match minute when Brugge United's Dries Dirckx looked to have a clear shot with the ball near the goal. The shot wasn't hard, but the ball still rolled over the goal line to make it 0-2 before the goalkeeper had a chance to intervene. When Brugge United's Christian Meys in the 36th minute got a chance for a shot 36th didn't hesitate and placed the ball to the right of the goalie. A beautiful save bye Sporting de Gijón's goalie prevented a goal. Rosendo Orixe could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 38th minute of the match, but Rudy Panhuijsen made a huge save. In the 41st minute, one of Sporting de Gijón:s players had the ball in front of the goal but got pushed and fell. The referee felt it was an obvious case and blew a penalty for Sporting de Gijón. The referee gave Brugge United a penalty, 42 minutes into the game. The penalty shot was made by Dries Dirckx, who made a well placed shot into the net to the right of Sporting de Gijón's Ariel Urbasa. 0-3. 45 minutes into the game, Kevin Zenón was given a yellow card after he appeared to trip an opposing player. Sporting de Gijón's manager was livid on the sidelines, but the referee was unmoved and gave Brugge United the free kick. In the 45th minute, Kevin Zenón hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. Sporting de Gijón's Marcial Benvido was substituted for Rosendo Orixe. Sporting de Gijón's Alberto Conrao was substituted for Blas Urdin. After the first half Brugge United were leading 0-3. They had played with great self confidence throughout the first half and fully deserved their lead.

The hometeam waved at the audience when it was time for Brian Aguirre to strike the kick off in the second half. Benicio Edorta hit a great freekick 53 minutes into the match. Dries Dirckx, 53 minutes into the match, dribbled the ball up the side of the field and decided to take a long shot at the goal. Unfortunately, the ball was poorly hit and landed closer to the corner than to the goal. In the 59th minute Casimiro Galindo shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Rudy Panhuijsen saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. 75 minutes into the match, Sporting de Gijón's goal looked a bit too open when Jochen Diericx came free, but Ariel Urbasa reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. Angelino Pelagius was slow to take the kick. During this time Sporting de Gijón's players had a chance to rest. After 92 played minutes Brugge United got a freekick which was hit by Samuel Vervoort. Christian Meys got his second yellow card in the match during the 93rd minute which meant that he had to leave the ground. After a rather tough play, Brugge United's Christian Meys got a free kick in the 94th minute. Brugge United's Jochen Diericx got a good chance for a goal in the 96th minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. After a rather tough play, Sporting de Gijón's Angelino Pelagius got a free kick in the 97th minute. Brugge United's supporters were very happy and cheered loudly because their team had won after a very close match.
