The crowd had been anticipating this game for weeks and the excitement in the stadium was easily visible. In the 2nd match minute, Rot-Weiss-Essen was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Sigi Tegtmeyer to maneuver through the defense. Guilherme Mendonça made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Sigi Tegtmeyer in the 5th minute of play. After some fancy dribbling in the 11th minute, Jacinto Munhoz managed to get in a good position for a shot. FC St. Pauli's supporters rose to their feet, but Jacinto Munhoz was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Johann Scheuerer breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. Guilherme Mendonça didn't have a chance when a screaming shot from Halil Winskowsky went, in the 13th minute, to the upper right corner, 1-0 was the resulting score. 21 minutes into the match, FC St. Pauli's Jacinto Munhoz sent off a blazing shot straight on target, a shot that Johann Scheuerer narrowly saved just below the crossbar. FC St. Pauli's Marquinhos de Amorim got a good chance for a goal in the 26th minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. In the 30th minute, Willian Guerra hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. Johann Scheuerer showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Dário Schmidt in the 34th minute of the match. Johann Scheuerer made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Jacinto Munhoz in the 35th minute of play. The supporters of FC St. Pauli booed when Rot-Weiss-Essen was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 40 match minutes in a wonderful position. Matias Wedekind didn't get a good kick on the ball. Halil Winskowsky could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 47th minute of the match, but Guilherme Mendonça made a huge save. 47 minutes into the game, Gil Leal was given a yellow card after he appeared to trip an opposing player. FC St. Pauli's manager was livid on the sidelines, but the referee was unmoved and gave Rot-Weiss-Essen the free kick. Gil Leal kicked well hit freekick during the 48th minute of the match. No-one was surprised that the home team were leading 1-0 at half-time.

The players of the away team seemed most concentrated when Halil Winskowsky stepped up to make the kick off in the second half. Jacinto Munhoz received a nice pass, split the defenders, and ran untouched towards the goal. Johann Scheuerer came out and tried to block the shot, but Jacinto Munhoz slotted it home off the left post making it 1-1 in the 55th minute. When FC St. Pauli's Jacinto Munhoz in the 59th minute got a chance for a shot 59th didn't hesitate and placed the ball to the right of the goalie. A beautiful save bye Rot-Weiss-Essen's goalie prevented a goal. Marquinhos de Amorim struck a weak shot in the 63rd minute. Johann Scheuerer didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for FC St. Pauli. The supporters of FC St. Pauli booed when Rot-Weiss-Essen was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 70 match minutes in a wonderful position. Amadeo König didn't get a good kick on the ball. After having played for 71 minutes, Jacinto Munhoz managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. FC St. Pauli's supporters crossed their fingers, but Jacinto Munhoz was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. Gil Leal sent away a hard shot on goal in the 75th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. Arí Britto in the 81stth minute had a little luck and got a chance for a shot in front of the goal. Without hesitation aimed to the right of Johann Scheuerer, who managed to lunge to the right direction and made a save. With a couple of smart ball manuevers Jacinto Munhoz in the 83rd managed to get into a good position. With a left leg Johann Scheuerer saved Rot-Weiss-Essen from getting behind. After 84 minutes, Sigi Tegtmeyer mouthed his way into the referee's book. The tension between the Rot-Weiss-Essen and the FC St. Pauli players grew even worse after the yellow card. In the 84th minute, Sigi Tegtmeyer hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. Jacinto Munhoz blasted a shot towards the goal in the 86th minute, but the shot hit the top of the crossbar and went out without Johann Scheuerer having to make a save. After 90th play minutes Jacinto Munhoz shot 1-3, a short shot which went by Johann Scheuerer and just under the crossbar into goal. FC St. Pauli's Jacinto Munhoz got a good chance for a goal in the 98th minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. FC St. Pauli's fans were overjoyed with their teams well-earned victory and stayed in the stadium long after the final whistle to celebrate the win.
