With an all-out effort, AC Milan's Viktor Sjöman threw himself towards the right post 25 minutes into the match and grabbed hold of the ball from Nikos Kosmidis, which otherwise would have been placed in the net. If Pavlos Kazakis had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 41st minute. The ball went over the crossbar instead. A collision led to AC Milan getting a freekick after 44 minutes play. Eleftherios Kanatakis hit a great ball. Viktor Sjöman didn't have a chance when a screaming shot from Koulis Saveris went, in the 47th minute, to the upper right corner, 4-1 was the resulting score.

Both teams looked relatively alert before the second half when the referee blew his whistle to tell Koulis Saveris to make the kick off. AC Milan's Kostas Tsioris played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Claes Grubb in the 55th minute of play. Viktor Sjöman showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Kostas Manouselis, who was totally free with the ball in the 56th minute. Viktor Sjöman didn't have a chance when a screaming shot from Koulis Saveris went, in the 58th minute, to the upper right corner, 5-1 was the resulting score. In the 63rd minute, Nikos Kosmidis ran past the defenders and hit a shot which went straight ahead into goal. Viktor Sjöman was frozen by the shot and now it was 6-1. In the 68th match minute, AC Milan was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Panos Karamichas to maneuver through the defense. After some careless play in the Newcastle United F.C. defense, Nikos Kosmidis kicked a shot that curved into the net to the right of Viktor Sjöman. The Newcastle United F.C. fans voiced their displeasure as they felt that Viktor Sjöman should have stopped the shot.
