Johnny Ibarra took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Damián Alcazar, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. 18 minutes into the game, Ecuador's Obregón Pardemanos nearly tore a hole in the net with a booming shot. George Forsyth made a valiant effort, but he could not reach the ball in time, 0-2. In the 25th minute Obregón Pardemanos shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but George Forsyth saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Cordero Aberasturi kicked well hit freekick during the 27th minute of the match. 31 minutes into the match, Ecuador's goalkeeper Johnny Ibarra had to clear away a ball on his right side after a cunning shot by Luis Bonet. After the first half Ecuador were leading 0-3. They had played with great self confidence throughout the first half and fully deserved their lead.

When the second half was about to start, both teams quickly lined up and Luis Bonet made a kick off. If Obregón Pardemanos had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 57th minute. The ball went over the crossbar instead. Obregón Pardemanos's shot was meant for the net just under the crossbar, but George Forsyth read the situation well and was quickly in position to make a wonderful save in the 58th minute of play. After some careless play in the Peru defense, Obregón Pardemanos kicked a shot that curved into the net to the right of George Forsyth. The Peru fans voiced their displeasure as they felt that George Forsyth should have stopped the shot. Johnny Ibarra showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Xuaco Oñaederra in the 66th minute of the match. Johnny Ibarra showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Damián Alcazar, who was totally free with the ball in the 69th minute. Obregón Pardemanos in the 72ndth minute had a little luck and got a chance for a shot in front of the goal. Without hesitation aimed to the right of George Forsyth, who managed to lunge to the right direction and made a save. Ecuador's Lorenzo Acutain was substituted for Urko Solbeida. Peru made a substitution. Gianfranco Saron replaced Luis Bonet. Ecuador's Flavio Cifuentes was substituted for Obregón Pardemanos. Flavio Cifuentes received a nice pass, split the defenders, and ran untouched towards the goal. George Forsyth came out and tried to block the shot, but Flavio Cifuentes slotted it home off the left post making it 0-5 in the 77th minute. When the final whistle was heard the away supporters stood up and showed their joy. Ecuador had managed to secure a win in what was a close match throughout.
