The crowd had been anticipating this game for weeks and the excitement in the stadium was easily visible. Óscar Cordoba came out of the goal in the 4th minute to try and stop a shot by Marlin FC's Linus Fredriksson. But to his dismay, Linus Fredriksson quickly shot the ball in between his legs and into the goal making it 1-0. With a little luck, Sporting de Gijón's Óscar Cordoba got control of the ball when Linus Fredriksson tried to sneak it across the goal line. Fermin Arixo fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 10th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Óscar Cordoba having to interfere. 12 minutes into the game, Atilano Feo was given a yellow card after he appeared to trip an opposing player. Sporting de Gijón's manager was livid on the sidelines, but the referee was unmoved and gave Marlin FC the free kick. A collision led to Sporting de Gijón getting a freekick after 12 minutes play. Atilano Feo hit a great ball. Linus Fredriksson could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 13th minute of the match, but Óscar Cordoba made a huge save. Óscar Cordoba made a fantastic save in the 15th minute, when Fermin Arixo sent off a good shot on target. After some careless play in the Sporting de Gijón defense, Linus Fredriksson kicked a shot that curved into the net to the right of Óscar Cordoba. The Sporting de Gijón fans voiced their displeasure as they felt that Óscar Cordoba should have stopped the shot. 27 minutes into the game, Alejandro Rufo threw the ball into play from the sideline. Marlin FC's Melchor Oidor quickly snatched the ball and retained possesion. Juan Carlos Alvarez took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Rune Fanström, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. An unexpectedly hard shot by Venancio Emesto in the 29th minute of play forced Marlin FC's goalkeeper Juan Carlos Alvarez to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. 30 minutes into the match, Sporting de Gijón's goal looked a bit too open when Fermin Arixo came free, but Óscar Cordoba reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. After 34 minutes of play, Sporting de Gijón's Diego Maradona made it 2-1 when he simply outclassed the defender marking him and hit a curling shot into the right side of the net. Juan Carlos Alvarez was left in no man's land by his defense there! Óscar Cordoba made a fantastic save in the 38th minute, when Dionisio Panpili sent off a good shot on target. An unexpectedly hard shot by Venancio Emesto in the 41st minute of play forced Marlin FC's goalkeeper Juan Carlos Alvarez to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Óscar Cordoba made a fantastic save in the 42nd minute, when Linus Fredriksson sent off a good shot on target. Aybek Orcun fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 46th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Óscar Cordoba having to interfere. No-one was surprised that the home team were leading 2-1 at half-time.

Marlin FC's Fermin Arixo got a good chance for a goal in the 53rd minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. Óscar Cordoba made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Aybek Orcun in the 56th minute of play. Fermin Arixo struck a weak shot in the 63rd minute. Óscar Cordoba didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for Marlin FC. When Dionisio Panpili came up free with the goalie in the 64th minute, the Marlin FC fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Dionisio Panpili couldn't finish the play. With a little luck, Marlin FC's Juan Carlos Alvarez got control of the ball when Venancio Emesto tried to sneak it across the goal line. Through an outstanding action, after 75 minutes, Juan Carlos Alvarez successfully got his hands on the ball before it slid into the goal at the right post. An unexpectedly hard shot by Dionisio Panpili in the 77th minute of play forced Sporting de Gijón's goalkeeper Óscar Cordoba to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Juan Carlos Alvarez made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Diego Maradona in the 80th minute of play. Eustacio Loiola charged in rather forcefully in the 82nd minute of the match, and managed to knock his opponent down. The referee showed Eustacio Loiola the yellow card, and asked the players to shake hands before continuing play. The supporters of Marlin FC booed when Sporting de Gijón was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 82 match minutes in a wonderful position. Eustacio Loiola didn't get a good kick on the ball. Sporting de Gijón made a substitution. Melchor Rosio replaced Venancio Emesto. In the 84th minute, Eustacio Loiola hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. Óscar Cordoba made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Fermin Arixo in the 94th minute of play. The referee blew his whistle, and the match came to a close. The players exchanged shirts and headed down the tunnel. The Marlin FC fans cheered their team off the field, for while Sporting de Gijón had put up a good fight, they were unable to come out of the game with any points to show for their effort.
