Lev Yashin was left in no man's land by his defense there! In the 21st minute the ball was on its way in behind Italy's goalkeeper Armando Gazza, but with the help of a sacrificing defense, he could catch the ball at the crossbar. In the 21st minute, Benedicto Naelio ran past the defenders and hit a shot which went straight ahead into goal. Armando Gazza was frozen by the shot and now it was 1-1. In the 28th minute Italy were awarded a corner. Alberigo Sessa went to the cornerflag to take it. Italy's Alberigo Sessa was first on the ball when the corner was shot and he dangerously headed the ball towards goal, but Lev Yashin in the goal jumped up to prevent it from getting in. Italy were awarded a corner in the 33th minute after Argentina's defender lost control of the ball, allowing it to roll out over the line. Alberigo Sessa took the corner. The corner led Italy's Dino Grilli to fire away a dangerous shot which Lev Yashin despite some difficulties managed to get hold on the ball. Fausto Santana kicked well hit freekick during the 42nd minute of the match. Italy's Alberigo Sessa shoveled away a really nice long shot in the 43rd minute of play. The shot was stopped by Lev Yashin but with some difficulty. The first half was very even, with the score at 1-1 when the whistle went for half-time. The players welcomed the break and quickly retired to the dressing rooms.

Argentina made a substitution. Paolo-César Maldini replaced Carlos Eufrasio. When the second half was about to start, both teams quickly lined up and Enzo Luongo made a kick off. Benedicto Naelio took the ball and in the 66 minute, shot a rapid shot to the right of a surprised Armando Gazza. Armando Gazza dived to the right, and did manage to get a hand on the shot, but it still went into the right corner making it 1-2. Argentina's attacker deliberately struck the ball against an opponent to win a corner for his team. The corner was taken by Paolo-César Maldini in the 72nd minute. Argentina's Paolo-César Maldini was first on the ball when the corner was shot and he dangerously headed the ball towards goal, but Armando Gazza in the goal jumped up to prevent it from getting in. In the 74th minute Didi Skarsø shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Lev Yashin saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Lev Yashin came out of the goal in the 76th minute to try and stop a shot by Italy's Armando Natalucci. But to his dismay, Armando Natalucci quickly shot the ball in between his legs and into the goal making it 2-2. The referee felt a red card was in order, 81 minutes into the game, when Dani Carbajal put in a rough tackle. Argentina:s Lev Yashin showed great skill when he stopped Alessandro Mara:s penalty. In the 89th minute Alberigo Sessa shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Lev Yashin saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Lev Yashin took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Didi Skarsø, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. In the 96th minute, Alberigo Sessa made a precise shot to the right of Lev Yashin. Argentina's defense was at fault, and the scoreboard reflected the new score, 3-2.
