After a defensive mix-up in Kazakhstan's zone, Edmundo Fontão stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Innokentiy Beskov came out of the goal and Edmundo Fontão tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. 37 minutes into the game, Edmundo Fontão cracked a shot to the right of the goalkeeper, 0-2. Innokentiy Beskov was not in position, and could only watch the ball fly in. Angola's Lourenço Polido proved his good apprehension of play when he, in the 39th minute of the match, managed to save Angola from getting a goal against them. 40 minutes into the match, Angola's goalkeeper Lourenço Polido had to clear away a ball on his right side after a cunning shot by Eduard Ponomarev. Lourenço Polido showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Klim Kostygin in the 40th minute of the match. When Klim Kostygin came up free with the goalie in the 47th minute, the Kazakhstan fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Klim Kostygin couldn't finish the play. Disappointed in the 0-2 score, the home team went to the dressing room to adjust tactics for the second half.

The players of the home team were most fresh-looking when they entered the field to play the second half. Edmundo Fontão was the one to do the kick off. Kazakhstan's Eduard Ponomarev got a good chance for a goal in the 62nd minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. Angola's Afonso Rochedo was substituted for Marcelo Curvelo. Angola's Pedro Apalanga was substituted for Nuno Viegas. Angola's attentive Nito Montoia managed to snatch the ball when Valentin Vorobiev made a throw-in in the 72nd minute of the game. With a little luck, Kazakhstan's Innokentiy Beskov got control of the ball when Custódio Lima Clemente tried to sneak it across the goal line.
