Armando Andrade's late challenge caught a Botafogo AP's player on the shin and left him crawling around in pain. The referee blew his whistle and produced the yellow card. Armando Andrade helped the player get up and apologised. A collision led to Grêmio FBPA getting a freekick after 5 minutes play. Armando Andrade hit a great ball. André Luís Trigo recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 9th minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. An unexpectedly hard shot by Amadeu Pitta in the 11th minute of play forced Botafogo AP's goalkeeper Chiquinho Vasconcelos to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. In the 17th match minute, Botafogo AP was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by André Luís Trigo to maneuver through the defense. A collision led to Botafogo AP getting a freekick after 19 minutes play. Diamantino Loyola hit a great ball. The supporters of Botafogo AP booed when Grêmio FBPA was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 27 match minutes in a wonderful position. Silvinho Perez didn't get a good kick on the ball. In the 29th minute, André Luís Trigo ran past the defenders and hit a shot which went straight ahead into goal. Rui Varela was frozen by the shot and now it was 1-0. Rui Varela took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from André Luís Trigo, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. An unexpectedly hard shot by André Luís Trigo in the 35th minute of play forced Grêmio FBPA's goalkeeper Rui Varela to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. A collision led to Botafogo AP getting a freekick after 38 minutes play. Clemente Lopes hit a great ball. Silvinho Perez received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 39th minute. Chiquinho Vasconcelos tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. 47 minutes into the match, Botafogo AP's André Luís Trigo sent off a blazing shot straight on target, a shot that Rui Varela narrowly saved just below the crossbar. The home fans were very happy to see their team leading 1-0 at half-time.

When the second half was about to start, both teams quickly lined up and André Luís Trigo made a kick off. Clóvis das Neves made in the 56th minute of the game a sloppy throw-in which André Luís Trigo however managed to control. Rui Varela showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from André Luís Trigo in the 57th minute of the match. After 58 minutes Grêmio FBPA's defender was forced to head the ball over the line for a corner. It was Clóvis das Neves who took care of the corner kick. After taking down the ball on Botafogo AP's corner Clóvis das Neves fired away a hard shot, but the defenders efficiently covered the most dangerous angles and Rui Varela quite easily take care of the ball. Eriberto Esteves fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 64th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Rui Varela having to interfere. A collision led to Grêmio FBPA getting a freekick after 68 minutes play. Diamantino Barbosa hit a great ball. Clemente Lopes's shot was meant for the net just under the crossbar, but Rui Varela read the situation well and was quickly in position to make a wonderful save in the 72nd minute of play. An unexpectedly hard shot by Eriberto Esteves in the 77th minute of play forced Grêmio FBPA's goalkeeper Rui Varela to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. In the 81stth minute of the game André Luís Trigo who was perfectly placed tried to make a shot on goal, but Grêmio FBPA's Rui Varela was lucky and managed to grab hold of the ball. After some fancy dribbling in the 86th minute, André Luís Trigo managed to get in a good position for a shot. Botafogo AP's supporters rose to their feet, but André Luís Trigo was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Rui Varela breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. In the 88th minute, Claudinho Zonta hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. After 92 played minutes Botafogo AP got a freekick which was hit by Eriberto Esteves. In the 94th minute Humberto Maia shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Rui Varela saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. For all the effort they put into the match, the Grêmio FBPA players left disappointed. They had fought hard, but couldn't break down the home team's defense. The match ended in a win for Botafogo AP.
