In the 6th match minute, Barcellos Mineiro FC was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Manuel Antunes to maneuver through the defense. After 7 played minutes, Laranja Mecânica FSCMZ's Alfredinho de Senna shot from a long distance, and at first it looked like the ball was going into the goal, but the goalkeeper Waldir Peres came through and got his fingers on the ball before it flew over the goal line. He then quickly gripped the ball tighter before the forwards in Laranja Mecânica FSCMZ reached it. An unexpectedly hard shot by Fausto Queirós in the 42nd minute of play forced Laranja Mecânica FSCMZ's goalkeeper Chiquinho Guerra to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. After the first half Barcellos Mineiro FC were leading 0-1. They had played with great self confidence throughout the first half and fully deserved their lead.

The players of the away team seemed most concentrated when Caetano Toscano stepped up to make the kick off in the second half.
