The crowd had been anticipating this game for weeks and the excitement in the stadium was easily visible. An unexpectedly hard shot by Brad Symons in the 5th minute of play forced Club Atlético de Newell's goalkeeper Matthieu Abelard to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Matthieu Abelard showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Rupert Hampshire in the 6th minute of the match. When the match clock showed 7 minutes, the score became 0-1 when Rupert Hampshire sped through Club Atlético de Newell's defense and sent away a curving shot that went into the net to the right of Matthieu Abelard. Matthieu Abelard came out of the goal in the 10th minute to try and stop a shot by Clapham Comets F.C.'s Rupert Hampshire. But to his dismay, Rupert Hampshire quickly shot the ball in between his legs and into the goal making it 0-2. Matthieu Abelard stood for a superb save when he managed to get hold of Rupert Hampshire's shot from short distance in the 13th minute. If Sammy Le Tissier had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 16th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. In the 21st minute Rupert Hampshire shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Matthieu Abelard saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Thanks to some nice foot action and superb ball handling Rupert Hampshire in the 28th minute a chance for a shot on goal. With an extended leg and a bit of luck Matthieu Abelard prevented the ball from getting in the gole. In the 30th minute, Brad Symons made a precise shot to the right of Matthieu Abelard. Club Atlético de Newell's defense was at fault, and the scoreboard reflected the new score, 0-3. After 33 minutes, Tom Rosický mouthed his way into the referee's book. The tension between the Clapham Comets F.C. and the Club Atlético de Newell players grew even worse after the yellow card. In the 33rd minute, Tom Rosický hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. An unexpectedly hard shot by Andrew Thomas in the 35th minute of play forced Club Atlético de Newell's goalkeeper Matthieu Abelard to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Clapham Comets F.C.'s supporters crossed their fingers, but Andrew Thomas was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. If Brad Symons had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 45th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. After the first half Clapham Comets F.C. were leading 0-3. They had played with great self confidence throughout the first half and fully deserved their lead.

If Rupert Hampshire had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 52nd minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. Curtis Higgins took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Tommy Knight, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. After 64 played minutes Club Atlético de Newell got a freekick which was hit by Spike Lambley. Matthieu Abelard was in exellent shape and made a fantastic save when he, in the 65th minute of the match, managed to get hold of the ball after a long shot from Andrew Thomas. After 65 played minutes Clapham Comets F.C. got a freekick which was hit by Rupert Hampshire. In the 71st minute, Larry Butt hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. 75 minutes into the match, Clapham Comets F.C.'s goal looked a bit too open when Philip Bakewell came free, but Curtis Higgins reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. In the 76th minute Greg Bastow shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Curtis Higgins saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Curtis Higgins showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Barrie Lester in the 79th minute of the match. An unexpectedly hard shot by Andrew Thomas in the 81st minute of play forced Club Atlético de Newell's goalkeeper Matthieu Abelard to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. After 83 played minutes Club Atlético de Newell got a freekick which was hit by Benjamin Barfield. In the 87thth minute of the game Rupert Hampshire who was perfectly placed tried to make a shot on goal, but Club Atlético de Newell's Matthieu Abelard was lucky and managed to grab hold of the ball. After some fancy dribbling in the 89th minute, Rupert Hampshire managed to get in a good position for a shot. Clapham Comets F.C.'s supporters rose to their feet, but Rupert Hampshire was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Matthieu Abelard breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. After 91 played minutes Club Atlético de Newell got a freekick which was hit by Barrie Lester.
