The crowd had been anticipating this game for weeks and the excitement in the stadium was easily visible. The throw-in from Cássio Severo in the 5th minute of the game was unfortunally taken care of by Grêmio FBPA's Armando Andrade. Grêmio FBPA's Osvaldinho Marquez played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Cícero Ribeiro in the 10th minute of play. In the 11th minute, Toninho Duarte got an opportunity to score, but he didn't get a solid hit on the ball and ended up kicking it wide of the goal. Amadeu Pitta hit a great freekick 12 minutes into the match. Osvaldinho Marquez showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Toninho Duarte, who was totally free with the ball in the 16th minute. 26 minutes into the match, Grêmio FBPA's goal looked a bit too open when Cícero Ribeiro came free, but Osvaldinho Marquez reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line.
