The audience was convinced that Kléber Mendes's extremely hard shot when he got free in front of the goal was going in, but Emílio de Amaral was relentless in the 37th minute of the game. But to his dismay, Alberto Couto quickly shot the ball in between his legs and into the goal making it 0-1. Luck had favoured the away team in the first, and they walked off with a 0-1 lead.

Both teams looked relatively alert before the second half when the referee blew his whistle to tell Cafu Catarinense to make the kick off. Válbson Aguiar made an important save on a dangerous shot by Cafu Catarinense in the 58th minute. Válbson Aguiar took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Tomás Passos, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. Alberto Couto received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 67th minute. Válbson Aguiar tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. The referee was alert and spotted a serious foul by Enrique Coutinho during the 70th minute. The player immediately received a yellow card. The referee gave Enrique Coutinho a yellow card, his second in the match, which meant he could no longer take part in the game.
