The audience thought a goal was coming when Venancio Emesto got free with Songur Yoran in the 14th minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. Sporting de Gijón were awarded a corner in the 15th minute after Arsenal FC's defender lost control of the ball, allowing it to roll out over the line. Saturnino Curcio took the corner. In the 18th minute Damaso Orlin shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Óscar Cordoba saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. With a couple of smart ball manuevers Damaso Orlin in the 22nd managed to get into a good position. With a left leg Óscar Cordoba saved Sporting de Gijón from getting behind. After 22 minutes, Damaso Orlin made it 0-2 with a short kick to the right side. Sporting de Gijón's Óscar Cordoba tried to save the shot but he was too slow in reacting to the shot. In the 25th match minute, Sporting de Gijón was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Saturnino Curcio to maneuver through the defense. After 26 played minutes Sporting de Gijón got a freekick which was hit by Alphonso Davies. In the 27th minute, Damaso Orlin got an opportunity to score, but he didn't get a solid hit on the ball and ended up kicking it wide of the goal. Diego Maradona fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 35th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Songur Yoran having to interfere. Songur Yoran showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Matias Bilintx, who was totally free with the ball in the 36th minute. Songur Yoran was out of position in the 36 minute of play, and Matias Bilintx capitalized on the mistake with a soft shot into the goal. Matias Bilintx really showed his touch with that goal: 1-2. In the 40th minute, Sporting de Gijón's Matias Bilintx dribbled the ball into the box and hit a shot with the outside of his foot, sending the keeper the wrong way. 2-2. 45 minutes had been played when some careless play by Sporting de Gijón's defense caused the ball to cross the line for a corner. Edvard Pihl was slow to take the kick. During this time Arsenal FC's players had a chance to rest. The corner went over the outstretched arms of Sporting de Gijón's goalie and right to Matthias Löfgren. He fired away a shot at goal, but the shot had too much spin, and it went just outside the goal. Sporting de Gijón's manager breathed a sigh of relief on the sidelines as his team had managed to escape an almost certain goal. In the 47th match minute, Arsenal FC was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Dragan Hristozov to maneuver through the defense. Sporting de Gijón's Wayne Rooney was substituted for Alejandro Rufo. Dragan Hristozov kicked well hit freekick during the 49th minute of the match.

An unexpectedly hard shot by Diego Maradona in the 83rd minute of play forced Arsenal FC's goalkeeper Songur Yoran to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Sporting de Gijón's Óscar Cordoba proved his good apprehension of play when he, in the 85th minute of the match, managed to save Sporting de Gijón from getting a goal against them. A hard shot 86 in the game by Damaso Orlin from a close distance when the talented Óscar Cordoba managed to make a qualified save. Sporting de Gijón's players were relieved. Thanks to some nice foot action and superb ball handling Matias Bilintx in the 88th minute a chance for a shot on goal. With an extended leg and a bit of luck Songur Yoran prevented the ball from getting in the gole. Sporting de Gijón's Mario Zanabria was substituted for Venancio Emesto. Arsenal FC made a substitution. Kong Lin Xiang replaced Matthias Löfgren. Arsenal FC's players left the field with heads hung low after losing a match that had been finely balanced throughout.
