The crowd had been anticipating this game for weeks and the excitement in the stadium was easily visible. An unexpectedly hard shot by Godfredo Barroso in the 4th minute of play forced YR Mechelen's goalkeeper Yanick Verschelde to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. After a rather tough play, YR Mechelen's Tobias Smidts got a free kick in the 4th minute. In the 5th match minute, AFC Cherries was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Václav Buš to maneuver through the defense. 6 minutes into the match, AFC Cherries's goal looked a bit too open when Miguel Van Mechelen came free, but Guto Jacinto reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. Guto Jacinto took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Miguel Van Mechelen, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. In the 9th minute, Godfredo Barroso left the goalkeeper for dead before tapping the ball into the right side of the net. The AFC Cherries fans were clearly happy with the effort and the scoreboard reflected the new score: 1-0. 15 minutes into the match, Nelu Oblemenco had an open shot that he just couldn't miss and scored to the right of Yanick Verschelde. YR Mechelen's manager could be seen yelling to the referee that Nelu Oblemenco was offside, but the referee ignored the protest. 2-0. AFC Cherries's Luděk Kareš got a good chance for a goal in the 17th minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. Yanick Verschelde showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Godfredo Barroso in the 19th minute of the match. The audience thought a goal was coming when Nelu Oblemenco got free with Yanick Verschelde in the 23rd minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. 24 minutes into the match, YR Mechelen's goal looked a bit too open when Luciano Cuenca came free, but Yanick Verschelde reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. Yanick Verschelde was a little too slow when Godfredo Barroso got a fine hit on the ball which went right into the goal in the 29th minute. The score was now 3-0. Yanick Verschelde made an important save on a dangerous shot by Nelu Oblemenco in the 33rd minute. YR Mechelen's Yanick Verschelde proved his good apprehension of play when he, in the 34th minute of the match, managed to save YR Mechelen from getting a goal against them. After a rather tough play, YR Mechelen's Glenn Imbereghs got a free kick in the 39th minute. After some fancy dribbling in the 39th minute, Luciano Cuenca managed to get in a good position for a shot. AFC Cherries's supporters rose to their feet, but Luciano Cuenca was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Yanick Verschelde breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. 45 minutes into the match, Andries Mangelschot notched a goal, 3-1, to the right of AFC Cherries's Guto Jacinto. Guto Jacinto was clearly disgusted with the effort of the defense and let the defenders know about it. Yanick Verschelde showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Luciano Cuenca, who was totally free with the ball in the 48th minute. When the referee blew for the end of the half the home team players were clearly happier, as they went in to the break leading 3-1.

The players of the home team were most fresh-looking when they entered the field to play the second half. Andries Mangelschot was the one to do the kick off. After some careless play in the YR Mechelen defense, Luciano Cuenca kicked a shot that curved into the net to the right of Yanick Verschelde. The YR Mechelen fans voiced their displeasure as they felt that Yanick Verschelde should have stopped the shot. In the 63rd minute Nelu Oblemenco shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Yanick Verschelde saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. YR Mechelen's Yanick Verschelde played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Luciano Cuenca in the 65th minute of play. Luciano Cuenca took the ball and in the 68 minute, shot a rapid shot to the right of a surprised Yanick Verschelde. Yanick Verschelde dived to the right, and did manage to get a hand on the shot, but it still went into the right corner making it 5-1. AFC Cherries's Naci Harmanda was substituted for Václav Buš. Godfredo Barroso sent away a hard shot on goal in the 80th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. But to his dismay, Nelu Oblemenco quickly shot the ball in between his legs and into the goal making it 7-1. Nelu Oblemenco fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 92nd minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Yanick Verschelde having to interfere. After a defensive mix-up in YR Mechelen's zone, Zeki Engintalay stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Yanick Verschelde came out of the goal and Zeki Engintalay tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. 96 minutes into the game, AFC Cherries's Radek Rokos nearly tore a hole in the net with a booming shot. Yanick Verschelde made a valiant effort, but he could not reach the ball in time, 8-1.
