In the 9th minute Sidney Diniz shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Christian Silviano saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Hélder Faria showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Saul Mateus, who was totally free with the ball in the 10th minute. 11 minutes into the game, Danilo Eufemio was given a yellow card after he appeared to trip an opposing player. RIVER PLATE's manager was livid on the sidelines, but the referee was unmoved and gave FLAMENGO the free kick. RIVER PLATE's Christian Silviano proved his good apprehension of play when he, in the 12th minute of the match, managed to save RIVER PLATE from getting a goal against them. Hélder Faria showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Saul Mateus in the 15th minute of the match. FLAMENGO's Hélder Faria played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Domingos Fortun in the 16th minute of play. 29 minutes into the match, Vítor Queirós notched a goal, 2-0, to the right of RIVER PLATE's Christian Silviano. Christian Silviano was clearly disgusted with the effort of the defense and let the defenders know about it. After a defensive mix-up in FLAMENGO's zone, Domingos Fortun stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Hélder Faria came out of the goal and Domingos Fortun tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. Apolo Arce scored 2-1 in the 38th match minute with a shot that went into the goal to the right of Hélder Faria, who was just a little too slow in reacting to the shot. In the 44th minute Flavio Gaspard shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Hélder Faria saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Hélder Faria made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Flavio Gaspard in the 45th minute of play. When the referee blew for the end of the half the home team players were clearly happier, as they went in to the break leading 3-1.

A collision led to RIVER PLATE getting a freekick after 50 minutes play. Apolo Aritza hit a great ball. In the 54th minute Apolo Arce shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Hélder Faria saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. After 55 played minutes FLAMENGO got a freekick which was hit by Sidney Diniz. In the 56th minute, RIVER PLATE's Saul Mateus ran free of his marker and smoothly shot the ball into the goal behind Hélder Faria. Hélder Faria yelled at his defense, as they had left him out to dry. 3-2. Christian Silviano showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Amauri Machado in the 61st minute of the match. If Apolo Arce had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 62nd minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. In the 63rd match minute, RIVER PLATE was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Melchor Tebaldo to maneuver through the defense. In the 66th minute Flavio Gaspard shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Hélder Faria saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. If Amauri Machado had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 67th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. Dario Hitz hit a great freekick 68 minutes into the match. The supporters of RIVER PLATE booed when FLAMENGO was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 70 match minutes in a wonderful position. Sidney Diniz didn't get a good kick on the ball. Hélder Faria was in exellent shape and made a fantastic save when he, in the 71st minute of the match, managed to get hold of the ball after a long shot from Aristides Bernaldo. In the 76th minute, Melchor Tebaldo hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. 78 minutes into the match, RIVER PLATE's goal looked a bit too open when Vítor Queirós came free, but Christian Silviano reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. An unexpectedly hard shot by Domingos Fortun in the 82nd minute of play forced FLAMENGO's goalkeeper Hélder Faria to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Hélder Faria showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Apolo Arce in the 88th minute of the match. Domingos Fortun charged in rather forcefully in the 90th minute of the match, and managed to knock his opponent down. The referee blew his whistle, and the match came to a close. The players exchanged shirts and headed down the tunnel. The FLAMENGO fans cheered their team off the field, for while RIVER PLATE had put up a good fight, they were unable to come out of the game with any points to show for their effort.
