In the 24th minute Leandro Heidemann shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Rene Higuita saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Don Gato could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 26th minute of the match, but Isaac Ferreira made a huge save. The audience thought a goal was coming when Don Gato got free with Isaac Ferreira in the 29th minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. Rene Higuita showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Celsinho Perez, who was totally free with the ball in the 30th minute. After a rather tough play, Brazil's Lothar Matthäus got a free kick in the 36th minute. Isaac Ferreira made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Claude Sena in the 39th minute of play. Colombia's Rene Higuita played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Leandro Heidemann in the 40th minute of play. In the 42nd minute Chinwo Krieser shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Rene Higuita saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. After 43 played minutes Brazil got a freekick which was hit by Lothar Matthäus. After the first half Brazil were leading 0-1. They had played with great self confidence throughout the first half and fully deserved their lead.

Both teams looked relatively alert before the second half when the referee blew his whistle to tell Don Gato to make the kick off. The supporters of Brazil booed when Colombia was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 54 match minutes in a wonderful position. Zuri Castillejo didn't get a good kick on the ball. Rene Higuita showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Leandro Heidemann, who was totally free with the ball in the 60th minute. The audience thought a goal was coming when Leandro Heidemann got free with Rene Higuita in the 64th minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. Willie Colon replaced Don Gato. 69 minutes had been played when some careless play by Brazil's defense caused the ball to cross the line for a corner. Claude Sena was slow to take the kick. During this time Colombia's players had a chance to rest. Colombia's Woody Vaquero was first on the ball when the corner was shot and he dangerously headed the ball towards goal, but Isaac Ferreira in the goal jumped up to prevent it from getting in. In the 71st minute, Leandro Heidemann reached a very good position and smashed the ball with a huge effort into the net, just to the left of Rene Higuita. The goal made the score 0-2. Xove Pintor fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 79th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Isaac Ferreira having to interfere. Willie Colon sent away a hard shot on goal in the 80th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. In the 87th minute Rafa de Almeida shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Rene Higuita saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Isaac Ferreira made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Willie Colon in the 88th minute of play. 89 minutes into the match, Colombia's goal looked a bit too open when Maurinho Mendonça came free, but Rene Higuita reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. In the 90th minute, Rafa de Almeida hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. In the 93rd minute, Willie Colon ran past the defenders and hit a shot which went straight ahead into goal. Isaac Ferreira was frozen by the shot and now it was 1-2. The referee blew the final whistle, and the away crowd roared, having watched Brazil eke out a victory against a very well matched opponent.
