Spectators: 7536 (Terracing: 5653, Seating: 1733, VIP seats: 150) Ulu Özkutsal's late challenge caught a Inter de Chillán's player on the shin and left him crawling around in pain. The referee blew his whistle and produced the yellow card. Ulu Özkutsal helped the player get up and apologised. Ulu Özkutsal hit a great freekick 3 minutes into the match. Mehmet Şefik Balcan came out of the goal in the 5th minute to try and stop a shot by Inter de Chillán's Steve Vaid. But to his dismay, Steve Vaid quickly shot the ball in between his legs and into the goal making it 0-1. José Ignacio Rocha made a fantastic save in the 10th minute, when Mevlüt Zeyrek sent off a good shot on target. In the 13th minute Inter de Chillán were awarded a corner. Arnaldo Detmer went to the cornerflag to take it. The goalkeeper smacked the ball away after a great corner, but Rogerio Berecedo advanced and headed the ball into goal, 0-2 in the 13th minute. A collision led to Newells Old Boys getting a freekick after 23 minutes play. Mevlüt Zeyrek hit a great ball. Newells Old Boys's Mehmet Şefik Balcan played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Juan Luis Dittborn in the 24th minute of play. 25 minutes into the match, Newells Old Boys's goal looked a bit too open when Steve Vaid came free, but Mehmet Şefik Balcan reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. In the 31st minute, Newells Old Boys's Çetin Elçibey seemed to kick out at an opponent. The referee saw this and, surprisingly, showed Çetin Elçibey the red card, dismissing him from the pitch. The coaching staff of Newells Old Boys protested bitterly, but the referee would have none of it, and Çetin Elçibey had no choice but to slowly walk off the pitch. Mehmet Şefik Balcan came out of the goal in the 32nd minute to try and stop a shot by Inter de Chillán's Arnaldo Detmer. But to his dismay, Arnaldo Detmer quickly shot the ball in between his legs and into the goal making it 0-3. In the 35thth minute of the game Juan Luis Dittborn who was perfectly placed tried to make a shot on goal, but Newells Old Boys's Mehmet Şefik Balcan was lucky and managed to grab hold of the ball. Mehmet Şefik Balcan showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Steve Vaid in the 36th minute of the match. If Juan Luis Dittborn had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 38th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. Mehmet Şefik Balcan showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Rogerio Berecedo in the 40th minute of the match. Inter de Chillán's Giuseppe Meazza got a good chance for a goal in the 41st minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. An unexpectedly hard shot by Giuseppe Meazza in the 43rd minute of play forced Newells Old Boys's goalkeeper Mehmet Şefik Balcan to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Mehmet Şefik Balcan showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Giuseppe Meazza in the 45th minute of the match. Mehmet Şefik Balcan made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Steve Vaid in the 46th minute of play. After some careless play in the Newells Old Boys defense, Giuseppe Meazza kicked a shot that curved into the net to the right of Mehmet Şefik Balcan. The Newells Old Boys fans voiced their displeasure as they felt that Mehmet Şefik Balcan should have stopped the shot. Even after changing tactics the home team jogged off the field with a 0-4 deficit. They would have to work harder if they wanted to turn things around in the second half.

The players of the away team seemed most concentrated when Orçun Baloğlu stepped up to make the kick off in the second half. The audience thought a goal was coming when Juan Luis Dittborn got free with Mehmet Şefik Balcan in the 56th minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. Hacı Hastimur sent away a hard shot on goal in the 57th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. Mehmet Şefik Balcan showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Steve Vaid in the 63rd minute of the match. Giuseppe Meazza fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 72nd minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Mehmet Şefik Balcan having to interfere. Inter de Chillán made a substitution. Juan Luis Alfaro replaced Juan Luis Dittborn. Newells Old Boys's defense didn't have a chance, in the 75th minute, when Steve Vaid scored to the left of an out of position Mehmet Şefik Balcan, making the score, 0-5. The crowd rose to their feet as Inter de Chillán's Francisco Lacunza slotted home a wonderful shot that went in to the left of Mehmet Şefik Balcan. That made the score 0-6 after 78 minutes of play. When Juan Luis Alfaro came up free with the goalie in the 81st minute, the Inter de Chillán fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Juan Luis Alfaro couldn't finish the play. Juan Luis Alfaro took the ball and in the 87 minute, shot a rapid shot to the right of a surprised Mehmet Şefik Balcan. Mehmet Şefik Balcan dived to the right, and did manage to get a hand on the shot, but it still went into the right corner making it 0-8. An unexpectedly hard shot by Francisco Lacunza in the 90th minute of play forced Newells Old Boys's goalkeeper Mehmet Şefik Balcan to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. In the 91st minute, Juan Luis Alfaro made a precise shot to the right of Mehmet Şefik Balcan. Newells Old Boys's defense was at fault, and the scoreboard reflected the new score, 0-9. Francisco Lacunza blasted a shot towards the goal in the 94th minute, but the shot hit the top of the crossbar and went out without Mehmet Şefik Balcan having to make a save. Steve Vaid in the 95thth minute had a little luck and got a chance for a shot in front of the goal. Without hesitation aimed to the right of Mehmet Şefik Balcan, who managed to lunge to the right direction and made a save. After having played for 96 minutes, Lothar Matthæus managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Inter de Chillán's supporters crossed their fingers, but Lothar Matthæus was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. Newells Old Boys's defense didn't have a chance, in the 98th minute, when Juan Luis Alfaro scored to the left of an out of position Mehmet Şefik Balcan, making the score, 0-10. The Newells Old Boys fans had already started to leave before the final whistle blew. Inter de Chillán were clearly better and deserved to take the win.
