UFC STEAUA's Ioan Oțeteleșanu played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Anacleto Clementi in the 5th minute of play. In the 7th minute, Joaquin Jerrald hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. In the 10th minute, Mingo Torrente made a precise shot to the right of Ioan Oțeteleșanu. UFC STEAUA's defense was at fault, and the scoreboard reflected the new score, 0-1. In the 15th minute Mingo Torrente shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Ioan Oțeteleșanu saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Eliodor Bărăian hit a great freekick 16 minutes into the match. A hard shot by Corneliu Hurezeanu from long distance, 20 minutes into the match, got Alberto Txurio's attention. Through a fast twist with his body, he could stop the ball from going in on his right side. In the 21st minute of the match Mingo Torrente sent off a long shot with destination to the right of the goalkeeper, but Ioan Oțeteleșanu skillfully saved the ball. Eliodor Bărăian hit a great freekick 28 minutes into the match. Mingo Torrente blasted a shot towards the goal in the 29th minute, but the shot hit the top of the crossbar and went out without Ioan Oțeteleșanu having to make a save. Guillermo Ovando recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 33rd minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. Anacleto Clementi scored 0-2 in the 35th match minute with a shot that went into the goal to the right of Ioan Oțeteleșanu, who was just a little too slow in reacting to the shot. Anacleto Clementi fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 39th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Ioan Oțeteleșanu having to interfere. In the 42nd minute, Emanuel Gheorghe hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. Mingo Torrente received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 44th minute. Ioan Oțeteleșanu tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. Ioan Oțeteleșanu took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Mingo Torrente, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. Newells Old Boys's Guillermo Ovando got a good chance for a goal in the 47th minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. The crowd was extremely unhappy with the home team's performance in the first half. They were losing 0-2.

In the 51st match minute, Newells Old Boys was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Nestor Tabb to maneuver through the defense. After a rather tough play, Newells Old Boys's Anacleto Clementi got a free kick in the 54th minute. Ioan Oțeteleșanu made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Mingo Torrente in the 58th minute of play. Şamil Darcan kicked well hit freekick during the 60th minute of the match. UFC STEAUA's Ioan Oțeteleșanu proved his good apprehension of play when he, in the 66th minute of the match, managed to save UFC STEAUA from getting a goal against them. 68 minutes into the match, UFC STEAUA's goal looked a bit too open when Mingo Torrente came free, but Ioan Oțeteleșanu reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. In the 69th minute, Anacleto Clementi ran past the defenders and hit a shot which went straight ahead into goal. Ioan Oțeteleșanu was frozen by the shot and now it was 0-3. In the 76th minute, Newells Old Boys's Mingo Torrente dribbled the ball into the box and hit a shot with the outside of his foot, sending the keeper the wrong way. 0-4. 82 minutes into the match, Anacleto Clementi notched a goal, 0-5, to the right of UFC STEAUA's Ioan Oțeteleșanu. Ioan Oțeteleșanu was clearly disgusted with the effort of the defense and let the defenders know about it. Ioan Oțeteleșanu made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Mingo Torrente in the 87th minute of play. UFC STEAUA were furious when Ernest Obreja was red carded, 89 minutes into the game, but the referee dismissed their protests. In the 89th minute, one of UFC STEAUA:s players had the ball in front of the goal but got pushed and fell. The referee felt it was an obvious case and blew a penalty for UFC STEAUA. In the 91st minute there was a penalty for Newells Old Boys. Mingo Torrente stepped forward and shot the ball to the right of a diving Ioan Oțeteleșanu. 0-6. The referee was alert and spotted a serious foul by Therkild Prendorf during the 96th minute. The player immediately received a yellow card. In the 96th match minute, UFC STEAUA was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Therkild Prendorf to maneuver through the defense. Newells Old Boys's fans were overjoyed with their teams well-earned victory and stayed in the stadium long after the final whistle to celebrate the win.
