Adam Hsi fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 6th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Matthew Edwards having to interfere. Matthew Edwards showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Ali Ramachandran, who was totally free with the ball in the 8th minute. Ali Ramachandran sent away a hard shot on goal in the 26th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. 34 minutes into the game, Jay Holmes was given a yellow card after he appeared to trip an opposing player. Club Atlético de Newell's manager was livid on the sidelines, but the referee was unmoved and gave Albirex Niigata FC the free kick. A collision led to Club Atlético de Newell getting a freekick after 34 minutes play. Jay Holmes hit a great ball. Philip Bakewell sent away a hard shot on goal in the 36th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. The home fans were very happy to see their team leading 1-0 at half-time.

The wind increased when Ashley Wells made the kick off in the second half. If Ashley Wells had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 58th minute. The ball went over the crossbar instead. Bradley Skipton kicked well hit freekick during the 68th minute of the match. If Barrie Lester had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 71st minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. With his leg Matthew Edwards managed to avoid a goal in the 76thth minute, when Albirex Niigata FC's Ali Ramachandran fired away a shot with a lot of spin towards his right hand side. Famih Swee fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 81st minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Matthew Edwards having to interfere. Spike Lambley hit a great freekick 87 minutes into the match. Wei Xuan Chandran struck a weak shot in the 92nd minute. Matthew Edwards didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for Albirex Niigata FC. Many of Albirex Niigata FC's supporters were seen to leave the ground early as it became clear their team was going to lose. Albirex Niigata FC may have spent more time on the ball, but Club Atlético de Newell were more willing to take their chances and they walked away with the win.
