When Sjoerd Staal fell near the penalty area in the 26th minute he thought he would be awarded a free kick. The referee ignored Fc Benefica's protests and gave Sjoerd Staal a yellow card for diving instead. After 26 played minutes Fc Benefica got a freekick which was hit by Sjoerd Staal. In the 27th minute, Veselin Stanoychev hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. Svetozar Gyurkovski took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Theo Blikman, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. The crowd rose to their feet as Fc Benefica's Dennis Bessing slotted home a wonderful shot that went in to the left of Svetozar Gyurkovski. That made the score 1-5 after 94 minutes of play. The Fc Benefica supporters could be heard counting down the last seconds of the match. They errupted in celebration when the whistle blew, knowing Fc Benefica would go home with victory in their luggage after a match that easily could have ended differently.
